Tennis ace Maria Sharapova has reached a compromise with the World Tennis Association (WTA) over a photoshoot she previously refused to participate in.
The Russian athlete originally declined to take part in the shoot because she didn't want any distractions before the Italian Open began on Monday (12May08). She claimed the organisation had threatened to fine her more than $300,000 if she refused.
As part of the two parties' new arrangement, the Sunday (11May08) shoot to promote the tour championships was reduced from several hours to just 90 minutes, according to the 21-year-old.
She says, "I was riding around in a car for an hour talking - pretending like I'm talking on the phone. The timing compromise was still pretty difficult since it's before a very big event for all of us. Considering the time reduction, it definitely makes that a lot easier than going into a four- or five-hour shoot with hair and makeup, which adds another hour."
The blonde beauty launched a protest on her personal website last month (Apr08), asking for the opinions of her fans.
She adds, "I've obviously made my point. I wanted to let my fans know that I didn't feel like people were listening to me. I think it's in the best interest of the tour."
In August (08), the star is set to compete in the Olympic Games - taking part in the event for the first time. (PAW/WNWA/TN)
