Joss Whedon Announces Dr. Horrible Plans

By Rafe Telsch: 2008-06-28 16:44:07
Joss Whedon Announces Dr. Horrible Plans I’ve been excited about Joss Whedon’s next project for a while now. No, I’m not talking about Dollhouse (although that is also exciting). Real Whedon fans know he’s got something up his sleeves that will debut before that: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog!

If you haven’t heard about it by now, Dr. Horrible is a musical project from Whedon that will appear online. This is something Whedon started working on during the writer’s strike and some of us expected to see a bit sooner, but I guess with the end of the strike Whedon went back to paying work. Not that I blame him – besides, we’re finally getting Dr. Horrible, and for free… at least for a week.

So what is it? It’s a supervillain musical in three parts, and the cast is legen – wait for it – dary. That’s right, Neil Patrick Harris is playing the supervillain, opposite regular Whedon actor Nathan Fillion. Felicia Day is also involved.

When is it? The series will be available for one week only through free streaming, as a thanks to Whedon’s fans and friends for sticking with him. In mid-July, you’ll be able to stream the three acts as they become available:
  • Act One: Tuesday, July 15th
  • Act Two: Thursday, July 17th
  • Act Three: Saturday, July 19th

Here’s the catch (you should have known there was a catch as soon as you heard the word “free”): The episodes will only be online until July 20th, at which point they’ll disappear forever! Okay, maybe not forever, but for a few days, and then there will be a charge to download the episodes. And, of course, there will eventually be a DVD, which Whedon promises more details on around Comic-Con time.

While the first part of the show won’t be online until July 15th, a trailer is available now and it looks like the humor we’ve come to expect from Whedon will run rampant throughout this whole project. Take a look below and then bookmark Dr. Horrible.com to catch the episodes as they go live.
