Schumacher Curses Lost Boys, Pushes Girls
A couple of weeks ago we told you about the direct to DVD sequel to Lost Boys that is expected to start production soon. While most of us agree Joel Schumacher’s career has gone downhill since he put nipples on the Batsuit, the Lost Boys director hasn’t gotten so desperate that he’s creating sequels like this one. That’s not to say it isn’t being made; just that he’s not behind it… and Joel isn’t too crazy about the sequel game either.
Schumacher recently told RottenTomatoes ”I told them to do 'Lost Girls' and not do 'Lost Boys Sequel.’ There is no 'Lost Boys' sequel. All the boys are dead. The Coreys are too old. So what would be the movie? You'd have to make up a whole new set of characters." Oddly, Schumacher wasn’t against a whole new set of characters, he just didn’t want them to be male: ”I told them to do 'Lost Girls.' It'd be great. I said, 'Do gorgeous teenage biker chicks who are vampires. It'll be great.' But they don't listen to me."
Of course, why should they listen to the Batman and Robin director? He doesn’t own the Lost Boys franchise, nor does he own New Jack City, Flatliners, or 8mm, all of which have either had sequels made or discussed in recent years. Schumacher is just the director, not the owner, so his opinion holds little substance to money grubbing studios.
As much as it pains me to say it, however, I have to agree with Schumacher. Lost Boys has been done before already, and there really is no need for a sequel. Hot vampire biker chicks, though… bring it on!
