I got all excited when I heard that Lode Runner was coming to Xbox Live Arcade a while back. I was even more stoked to hear that it would feature level sharing. Everything seemed all good and well, but my enthusiasm fell a bit when I learned that Microsoft wanted me to drop 15 dead presidents on the game, instead of 10 (which is what most people would agree that it should be priced at).
So this morning, I was reading on Joystiq about how Lode Runner had been released for a sweet, fairly-priced $10, but was then hiked back up to the intended 15 big ones.
"This was incorrectly priced at 800 points. That has since been corrected," Major Nelson of Xbox Live told readers of his blog.
What was even worse was that numerous comments had been posted on the Major Nelson blog praising the decision to release it at the lower price point. "Finally and even better, the game is 800 MP and NOT the 1200 as previously stated!" posted one user. "Sweet deal and good move!"
After the update to the article was added, and the price was hiked up again, the comments went sour, however. "My desire to buy this game has now ALSO been corrected," said another user. "Cheers. Seriously, how can anyone buy this at 1200 now knowing people bought it for 800? Amazingly stupid move, even for my favorite company."
Demands for a return to the $10 price point began sweeping across the internet. Gamers from Neogaf, Gamefaqs, N4G, and nearly every other gaming site online have made their frustration about the new XBLA pricing structure clear. $10 is THE way to go with games like these. $15 could be acceptable for SOME games, and $20 is way over the line (I'm looking at you, Puzzle Quest).
No, good sirs from Microsoft. You didn't "correct" anything. But you still have the opportunity to do so. We want the $10 standard, or even cheaper for really small games.
