PlayStation Mobile Game Givaway Starts Today

Sony is apparently in a festive spirit, celebrating the holiday season with free games for those with a PlayStation Certified device of PlayStation Vita. Get ready for a bunch of gratis PS Mobile titles!

Announced this afternoon via the PlayStation Blog, the PlayStation Mobile Festive Givaway is exactly what it sounds like. Starting today, Nov. 27, and running through Dec. 18, then picking up again from Jan. 8 to Jan. 22, the publisher will be dishing out two PS Mobile games a week, free of charge.

Reminiscent of a similar promotion around this time last year, the purpose of this promotion appears to be spreading good will among PlayStation customers, as well as reminding folks that the PlayStation Mobile service actually exists. The timing makes a lot of sense, as sales of Vitas have been on the rise as of late, partially due to new titles like Killzone: Mercenary and Tearaway, as well as folks finally taking the plunge to serve as a companion app for the recently launched PlayStation 4.

Over the past 12 months, more and more articles have started popping up on the PlayStation Blog letting gamers know about the latest Mobile offerings. It’s clear that Sony is trying to create a solid ecosystem for the service, but no word on whether or not it’s actually paying off. Here’s hoping some games, at least, are finding some success. I’ve played quite a few gems from the Mobile library, especially Cytus Lambda, a rhythm game that’s an absolute steal at 12 bucks.

Most of the PS Mobile titles, though, will only set you back a couple of dollars. Just about every genre is covered, ranging from quick and easy time sinks to full-on RPGs, shooters and adventure games. There’s a lot of indie darlings (and also quite a few stinkiers), making PS Mobile, at the very least, worth a look-see.

For the first week of this Festive Giveaway promotion, the games on offer are Passing Time and Rymdkapsel.

I’m unfamiliar with Passing Time, but the post refers to it as a “touch controlled football game.” That’s “soccer” to us yanks.

“Pass the ball and burn the opposition with a blistering fireball,” reads the blog post. “Prove your slo motion skills by mastering the rock ball and show off your one-touch finesse with the explosive bomb ball.”

I’m going to go out on a limb here and guess that those aren’t street-legal soccer rules. Either way, the game sounds kind of neat and, hey, you can’t really beat free.

Rymdkaspsel, on the other hand, I am quite familiar with. It’s a brilliant, seemingly simplistic strategy game that boils down the genre into simple shapes, regions and colors. There’s a lot of hidden depth here and, again, you can’t go wrong with that asking price.

Get both of these games free of charge today on your Vita or PlayStation Certified device and come back next week to find out which new games are being added to the roster.
