It was bound to happen sooner or later, as the PSN and Xbox Live services have been gearing up to offer more digital content. According to recent reports by a research and marketing firm, the Xbox 360 and PlayStatinon 3 are already in the process of battling for more PayTV Operators. Which means you could be viewing more television programs, more frequently on your game consoles.
"The launch of Microsoft’s Experience and the Xbox LIVE Netflix streaming video service is a perfect example of how potent these services will soon become,” notes Michael Greeson, president and co-author of this new report. "There is little doubt these services are finally ready for primetime.”
Already, the Xbox Live has amassed more than 15,000 movies (1,000 of which are HD) and some 13,000 TV shows for download-to-own. And the new Netflix program has added an additional 12,000 movies to the XBL database. Furthermore, the PlayStation Network isn't too far behind -- despite the late entry into the online network service for consoles -- as Sony has more than 1,000 movies available on PSN, as well as hundreds of additional television programs. Both Microsoft and Sony will be vying for more rights to more PayTV Operators in the coming months, especially with Microsoft's NXE up and running, and the PS3 aiming to further its install base.
What's funniy though, is that even Nintendo sees the profit in using a console to stream television programming, as the Wii has jumped on-board with Fujisoft to introduce 'Everybody's Theater Channel' to Japanese Wii owners later on in December of this year.
According to the research, things are expected to truly boom for home consoles up through 2012. I'll safely sit back and see how things pan out for 2009, 2010 and 2011, thank you very much.
