Count The Police as the latest band to go “exclusive.” In the most recent example of what has become the increasingly common practice of superstar acts signing away exclusive rights for distribution of their recordings to a single retail outlet, The Police will offer it’s upcoming live release Certifiable exclusively through mega-retailer Best Buy.
Certifiable was recorded last December in Buenos Aires, as part of the band’s record shattering reunion tour. That tour comes to an end with tonight’s (August 7) performance at Madison Square Garden. Best Buy will be broadcasting the encores from that show live on it’s website, beginning at 10:45 EST.
The Police are of course not the first rock superstars to offer their music exclusively through Best Buy. Both Elton John and The Rolling Stones signed similar exclusivity deals with the retail giant. More recently, the Eagles and Journey offered their most recent albums exclusively through WalMart, which was also the only place where you could buy the live When In Rome DVD from Genesis' reunion tour.
AC/DC’s upcoming Black Ice album will also be sold exclusively through WalMart. The smart money out there in music industry land has Earth Wind & Fire doing the same early next year with a three disc CD/DVD set patterned after the model set by Journey with their WalMart exclusive 3 disc release Revelation. Journey and Earth Wind & Fire are both clients of Azoff Management.
Although most insiders say that such retail exclusivity deals are “win-win” propositions for the artists, offering big money guarantees without the headaches many associate with traditional record label distribution, critics of the deals are just as vocal. The most often heard criticism concerns how exclusivity deals have the net effect of freezing out independent music retailers. These same stores who took a chance when such artists were still developing an audience stand to lose sales, even though they often played crucial roles in breaking the artists in the beginning.
The Police’s Certifiable will be available at a Best Buy location near you on October 7 as a 2 DVD/2 CD set, a single disc Blu-ray/2 CD combo, and in a triple vinyl configuration with an MP3 download.
