There's nothing quite like strolling through the late summer pastures of New York City fresh from an 11-hour plane ride back from the depths of deserted Middle Eastern mountain tops, backed-up checkpoints ushered by armed soldiers and unlimited babaghanoush. Home is where the heart is, and Sunday afternoon that meant Jamie Lidell at Central Park's Summer Stage.
Donning skin tight black pants with a matching blazer – undershirt not included – Lidell and his love carpet took the stage to an eclectic crowd of young Upper East Side yuppies and partially-dyed afro-sheen rap enthusiasts. Lidell bought the funk, remixing his own material on stage, stretching out the likes of "Little Bit of Feel Good" and "Multiply."
Admitting he had no idea "A Little Bit More" would be used in a Target commercial, he encouraged fans to sing, clap, bounce and dance to the hit to which they happily responded. Using his vocals to produce an eclectic array of human beat boxing, Lidell kept the crowd focused, at times losing his sunglasses in enthusiasm. Shading himself with an umbrella propped by his computer table, he recorded and later remixed his vocals live on stage.
They say it takes you 21 days to break a habit, however I learned that in just two weeks I'd grown entirely accustomed eating three-course meals for lunch at 4 p.m. and disobeying any and all traffic patterns. It sure is good to be back.
