Gnarls Barkley Video Hits the Ground

By Peter Kimmich: 2008-05-09 23:09:37
Gnarls Barkley Video Hits the Ground I know I’m not supposed to like Gnarls Barkley. Everyone with three cents’ worth of musical taste says they hate them, they’re dorky, or whatever. Most of the time, I take those people’s advice and don’t bother to check out a band. Because most of the time those people are right, at least with indie rock, which is my preferred fare in music.

In fact, I’ve only encountered one occasion where all the musical know-it-alls around me were saying they hated a band, and I said, “Fuck y’all.” That was with Outkast. Outkast is decidedly not indie rock, so it was a red flag that maybe these people don’t always know what they’re talking about.

Lately, these people have all been saying the same things about Gnarls Barkley, and I believed them. I mean, look at the name. It’s like Charles Barkley, the Houston Rockets power forward, but with “gnarls,” which is just ghetto for the surfer word, “gnarly.” It’s the stupidest name I’ve heard since The Barenaked Ladies. Then their press photos all look like they raided the Halloween costume section at Rite Aid. Safe to say the naysayers didn’t have to try hard to make their point.

But then this promotion came around for their new video. It’s the track “Going On,” from their latest release, The Odd Couple, and I must say, there are no clowns, Superman outfits or storm trooper costumes. The music’s not bad, and the lyrics aren’t about farting or anything. I definitely have high standards when it comes to liking a band, and GB still has a ways to go before I’ve changed my mind about them, but the video at least makes a good argument for paying more attention. Check it out below. It might be worth it.
