In the latest – and possibly the stupidest – development in the public squabble between Oasis songwriter Noel Gallagher and frontin’ hip-hop cowboy Jay-Z, the rapper tossed a few not-so-cozy Noel references into a performance in New York’s Madison Square Garden Thursday night, previewing what may well be a new track on his upcoming Blueprint 3 album, MTV UK News reported Thursday.
"That bloke from Oasis said I couldn't play guitar/Somebody should have told him I'm a fuckin' rock star," the line says, followed by a “Wonderwall”-ish dis, “Today is gonna be the day that I'm gonna throw it back to you.”
This is just a hunch, but this may be referring to Noel’s “I’m not having it” comment regarding Jay-Z’s headlining slot in the Glastonbury music festival earlier this year. It was admittedly a bold statement from the axe-wielding Brit who occasionally speaks his mind a little too loud. Even though he was completely, entirely right.
Jay-Z at first responded with innocent, mirror-rehearsed eloquence, saying “the world changes and we have to embrace the change. I've never been involved in anything this controversial. What's the big deal about doing a show?" Despite the batting eyelashes and the wafting Good-Guy brand cologne, it seemed like a nice, graceful closing statement. This latest move, then, is more like what the rapper actually meant to say. Kind of like the backhand-slap delivered after all the other school kids shut their mouths and took a seat.
Jay-Z, you da real, man. Maybe the extra album sales will even buy you a few new Hills mansions, or a fleet of shiny yellow Hummers, or another vinyl technicolor SpongeBob clothing line or two. Oasis may have bagged and borrowed a few tunes here and there, but for a “natural progression” of music to lead to hip-hop’s gratuitous dry-humping of Glastonbury or any other rock and roll theater would be a tragic, disappointing degradation. Now get back on the damn bus, fool.
