Wow, it's 8/8/8. Let’s hope that’s not anything like 666, right? On that note, welcome to this week’s edition of the Friday Flash. Show em' if you know em'.
So The Police wrapped up their nearly two year long reunion tour last night at Madison Square Garden before an adoring sold-out crowd of thousands, and presumably millions more courtesy of a live feed on Best Buy’s website during the encores.
The cops have grossed a total of $358,825,665 at the box office, according to Billboard Boxscore, making it the third biggest tour ever. In addition to the hits like “Message In A Bottle” and “Everything Little Thing She Does Is Magic,” the band mixed things up a bit at the Garden with covers of Jimi Hendrix’s “Purple Haze” and Cream’s show-opening “Sunshine Of Your Love” in the setlist.
As reported here yesterday, a live album and DVD from the tour called Certifiable will be released October 7 exclusively through mega-retailer Best Buy. Tickets to the Madison Square Garden show were available only via donation to local public television stations Thirteen/WNET and WLIW21.
According to Billboard Magazine, Weezer will kick off a fall American tour on Sept. 23 at the Tsongas Arena in Boston. The tour will hit 21 cities, including New York's Madison Square Garden (Sept. 24), Detroit's Palace of Auburn Hills (Sept. 29), Chicago's Allstate Arena (Oct. 2), Seattle's Key Arena (Oct. 11), Los Angeles' Forum (Oct. 14) and Dallas' Nokia Theater (Oct. 21). No ticket information is yet available.
The Clash will officially release their often-bootlegged Oct 13, 1982 performance at New York’s Shea Stadium this fall via the Sony Legacy label. The band who were touring as opening act for the Who at the time, were also riding high on the success of the album Combat Rock, and its singles “Rock The Casbah” and “Should I Stay Or Should I Go.” In addition to live versions of those songs, the Shea Stadium CD will also feature live versions of well known Clash hits like “London Calling” and “Train In Vain.”
Finally, the band Wolfmother have apparently called it quits, although don’t tell that to lead singer/guitarist Andrew Stockdale, who insists that he will carry on with new musicians in a new Wolfmother. No word yet on any replacements for departed members keyboardist/bassist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett. Wolfmother sold a half million copies of their debut album, and earned a Best Hard Rock Grammy for the song “Woman.”
