It seems that the United States is turning more than just a glozing eye in Africa’s direction these days, what with Angelina and Brad adopting children from all corners of the world and the national celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday that took place on 27 June in London. Now in a new twist of publicity, MTV Networks is hosting its first African Video Music Awards. According to sources at Billboard.biz, one of the world’s biggest entertainment conglomerates has decided to shed a little light on the ‘Dark Continent’ and introduce the world to some of the vital artists and musicians that Africa has to offer.
According to MTV Networks Africa Senior VP Alex Okosi, the show will take place at the Velodrome in Abuja, Nigeria on November 22. For those who may be skeptical as to what direction the show will be taking, have no fear. The VMA’s are no different in Africa than they are in the States—the exception, of course, being that we won’t be seeing any barely there sequined jumpsuits painted onto lip-synching pop tarts (of course, that’s just my assumption). The show will run like any other award show: about two hours long with performances from top African and international artists. There will be awards, an international host, and plenty of raucous good fun for all involved.
As a precursor to the milestone event, four concerts featuring some of this year’s nominees will be held throughout early and mid-November in the cities of Johannesburg, Nairobi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Lagos.
The sponsor of the event will be Kuwait-based telecommunications giant Zain. In conjunction with MTV Africa, Zain will broadcast the awards show around the globe on MTV, online, mobile, and radio outlets—including MTV Base (a pan-African television channel), MTV2, STV and AIT (based in Nigeria), and TV3 (based in Ghana). Says Okosi, “The MTV Africa Music Awards with Zain will create an unprecedented global platform for African musicians to shine and to spread the word about Africa’s extraordinary music talent.”
Not since “We Are the World” has the American music community given a damn about the African voice. Well, on November 22, all eyes and ears will be at the ready to be stunned and entertained at a party the likes of which only MTV can throw. With genres ranging from hip-hop to dancehall, this is sure to be one of the most amped and spectacular celebrations that Africa, as well as those of us who will be tuned in, has ever seen.
