For the first time since Michael Jordan beat the Lakers for the NBA title, the hottest selling album of the year failed to move three million units. The honor, if you can call it that, for 2008 went out to Lil Wayne who’s new disc Tha Carter III sold just shy of two million nine hundred thousand copies. I’m sure he’ll still take it.
According to Billboard, the rest of the top ten was littered throughout different genres with mainstays AC/DC and Metallica fighting for a place alongside Coldplay, Beyonce, and Jack Johnson. In total, four hundred and thirty million Cds were moved this year by major retailers, which is almost a fifteen percent drop from 2007. Expect a decrease along the same lines next year.
Country pop favorite Taylor Swift did well for herself, grabbing both the third and sixth spots on the list which combined amounted to just shy of four million records moved. She also went to prom with someone on MTV. I seen it!
In conclusion, Dick and Barry from High Fidelity need to start looking for new jobs.
