2012 Oscar Nominations Announced, Read The Full List Here
The 2012 Academy Award nominations were announced early this morning, in part in a TV and online broadcast hosted by Jennifer Lawrence and Academy President Tom Sherak. Leading the pack was Hugo, which scored 11 nominations including Best Picture, though The Artist wasn't far behind with 10 nods of its own. Though as few as 5 films could have been nominated for Best Picture, the category includes 9 films, indicating a wide range of support for a number of films, including several that were seen as complete long-shots for the nomination, like Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and War Horse.
If you're looking for surprises there are plenty to choose from, including the very presence of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close-- which also got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Max von Sydow-- and a Best Actress nomination for Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Star of the tiny drama A Better Life Demian Bichir managed to knock out Leonardo DiCaprio in the Best Actor category, which also gave Gary Oldman his first Oscar nomination for his performance in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. And even the raunchy comedy Bridesmaids has reason to celebrate this morning; it scored two nominations, for Best Original Screenplay and for Melissa McCarthy as Best Supporting Actress. You can read a much longer analysis of the morning's news here.
Here's the full list of categories; refresh for updates and more commentary throughout the morning. This year's Oscars will be handed out during the usual lavish awards ceremony on February 26.
