Brace yourselves for a sequel, because An Inconvenient Truth has just won Al Gore a Nobel Peace Price. I’m not talking about a sequel to the movie mind you, rather a sequel to his failed presidential run in which he won the popular vote but ended up conceding to George Bush anyway. The award win has renewed calls from defeated liberals who Al to run for president again. Let’s hope he doesn’t listen.
Meanwhile, I may actually have to get up off my ass and watch an Inconvenient Truth. It’s been sitting on my TV for nine months, I just haven’t been able to work up the energy to watch it. It’s not that I’m not interested in climate change, it’s that I don’t think it’s going to tell me anything I don’t already know. Yes, global warming is happening and it’s a problem. It’s scary enough as it is, I don’t need a movie to make me even more scared. Whether or not there are polar bears dying I have to get up in the morning and go to work. I have to eat lunch. I have to pay bills. The IRS is still probably going to want me to pay my taxes.
And that’s always seemed to be the problem with the movie… what’s the point? I’ve never heard of anyone who didn’t believe in global warming being swayed by it, and for those who already do it’s mostly preaching to the converted. I’m sure it’s a wonderful documentary, in fact it must be since the Nobel committee alluded to it rather specifically when giving the award by noting Gore’s “strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change. He is probably the single individual who has done most to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to be adopted.” Unless he’s made other movies, it’s probably safe to assume that “films” means An Inconvenient Truth. Not sure why it’s plural.
So Al’s got an Oscar, a Nobel Peace Prize, and now maybe he’ll re-run for president. I hope not, we really don’t need to go through that again. Stay retired Al! Enjoy being a winner for a change. Hug some baby seals for me, they’re so cute.

I am as happy today as I was the day that Jimmy Carter won the same prize, given to those who make a difference. How sad that not only do you choose to ignore the heed and go on with your small life convinced you are unable to make a difference, the least you could do is give a deserved pat on the back of those who do change lives and with it the world. How happy I am that they are finally rewarded for their efforts and how hard they work to go beyond their own small problems and look at the rest of us.
