Everyone has a secret, geeky passion that they shield from the world. As we’ve seen around Cinema Blend this week, my editor has a gigantic man crush on Star Trek. Don’t laugh. You probably have a whole mess of pogs inside your closet or a Dungeons And Dragons t-shirt. I won’t ridicule you for those colossal mishaps. My dweeby devotion? It’s wrestling. For the last fifteen years, I have completely immersed in amidst alpha males, color-coordinated costumes, and toupee wearing ring announcers (Howard Finkle shout-out!). Unfortunately, the man has decided this particular spazz sensation isn’t worth producing movies about. Somehow comic book fans can convince Hollywood they’re worth being heard, but we, wrestling enthusiasts, are still ignored. Sure, we occasionally get a documentary about Jake The Snake’s personal problems, but that just isn’t enough. It really never was. Thankfully, one bare-fisted brawling fan seems to have risen above his blue-collar origins and is throwing a bone back at us.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robert Siegel has written an indie drama about wrestling which will be entitled The Wrestler. The fictional action will center around grappling star Randy ‘The Ram’ Robinson, a former master of the squared circle who has deteriorated quite a bit since his heyday. After a mid-match coronary calamity, The Ram decides to settle down and does the only sensible thing: He moves in with a middle-aged stripper and her son. Soon, the urge to return to the ring becomes too strong, and he sets up a match with his mortal enemy: The Ayatollah. Don’t these lively characters just make you want to watch Monday Night Raw tomorrow? I guess not. Hopefully, your interest has at least been peaked enough to keep reading.
The Wrestler is currently in development with Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures. Nicholas Cage is in talks to play the film’s lead. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Academy-Award winning actor, but why not cast an aging wrestler to portray the protagonist? I hear Chris Benoit isn’t doing anything these days. He did what to his handicapped son? Nevermind. Bring on Nicholas Cage.
