Captain America 3 In The Works At Marvel Studios
Comic book movie fans have spent months and months wondering what Marvel Studios has planned for the upcoming Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe outside of Edgar Wright's upcoming Ant-Man, and today that picture has become a bit clearer. Variety is reporting that the studio is now in the process of putting together plans for a Captain America 3, and according to their sources that includes bringing back directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
The trade notes that nothing is official just yet, as the project has not yet been officially greenlit and negotiations haven't begun yet, but reportedly the groundwork is being built now. The development comes as a result of the folks at Marvel being "impressed" with the work that was done on the upcoming Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which has apparently been performing well in recent test screenings. The studio wants to lock up the Russos as quickly as possible, and while Marvel hasn't hired any screenwriters to take care of the script just yet, the directing duo is already working out an outline for the second sequel's plot.
Obviously details are very slim at this point, but Variety notes that many of the actors already have deals set up for a third film, including star Chris Evans. Right now it would seem that the only real big question mark in the equation is whether or not The Winter Soldier will perform well enough at the box office to justify moving forward with a sequel, but after the incredible success of both Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World it's practically impossible to imagine the film doing poorly.
Before signing on to direct Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo were best known for their work on the small screen, both directing episodes of and producing shows like Arrested Development and Community. When they were first brought into the Marvel fold it seemed like a very strange move for the studio, but if this new report is to be believed then would appear that the gamble has definitely paid off. The film will be in theaters on April 4th, and you can check out the trailer below:
