It looks like that unnecessary Day The Earth Stood Still remake is still moving ahead. Today the Hollywood North Report confirmed the story we brought you last month here, in which we told you Scott Derrickson was up to direct it. HNR says he’s now a lock for the job. This would probably be a good place to insert a joke about Al Gore playing Gort, but since he’s remade himself as an environmentalism rock star I guess Al Gore is robotic jokes are no longer funny.
As for Derrickson, he’s become one of Hollywood’s most sought after directors since he surprised everyone with the better than expected Exorcism of Emily Rose back in 2007. He’s currently attached to direct several other upcoming high profile projects as well, including a movie adaptation of Paradise Lost.
The original, classic science fiction movie The Day The Earth Stood Still was directed by the legendary Robert Wise, a man whose shoes Scott Derrickson has absolutely no chance of filling. In addition to Earth Wise was responsible for such landmark movies as West Side Story, The Sound of Music, The Andromeda Strain, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Derrickson may be a hot young talent, but there’s no way he can possibly measure up. Scott, you’re pretty much screwed.
