After Earth Trailer Has Jaden Smith On A Mission To Save Himself And His Father

As promised, the new trailer for M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming sci-fi action adventure film After Earth has arrived today. It introduces us to Jaden Smith's character, Kitai, a reckless young ranger who faces a major challenge when his space ship crash lands on an abandoned Earth. Tasked with saving himself and his injured father Cypher (Will Smith), Kitai must survive the harsh elements, uncharted terrain and various beasts that are especially lethal to humans. There's also a mysterious alien creature out to get him. Welcome to earth.

After Earth is set a thousand years after mankind has abandoned Earth, when the planet became uninhabitable. The trailer below, which comes via iTunes, begins by introducing us to Kitai, who's apparently not doing so well in training school. Perhaps he'll have more success training in the field, as he's about to be thrown into a very dangerous, life-threatening situation.

The emphasis on differentiating danger and fear was addressed in the first trailer, but this one takes that a step further as we learn that one of Kitai's flaws in training has been confusing courage with recklessness. Perhaps being the son of a legendary ranger has gone to his head. The story seems set for Kitai to rise above his shortcomings as he attempts to save himself and his father, braving fluctuating temperatures, dangerous beasts and some mysterious life form, in an effort to obtain a beacon on a planet where "everything has evolved to kill humans."

Written by Gary Whitta and M. Night Shyamalan, After Earth arrives in theaters June 7. More information, photos and the first trailer can be found in our Blend Film Database.
