I don’t think there’s anyone who isn’t excited about the news that The Hobbit is moving forward with Peter Jackson involved in some point. Heck, I haven’t even seen many people questioning the decision to make two movies instead of one (where the three Lord of the Rings books became three movies). We all want to return to Middle Earth, and that’s equally true for the ring bearer, Elijah Wood.
Wood told MTV Movies Blog that he would love to return to the franchise and that there might be a possibility for him to do so, although nothing is certain. He said that he’s learned through e-mails with Jackson that, ”as far as I know the two films that they’re doing, one will be ‘The Hobbit’ and another will take place between the 60 years that happened between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.”
Now, Wood isn’t aware of anything that has specifically been written to bring Frodo back, but there isn’t a ton of “documented” Middle Earth history between the prelude and the major saga written by Tolkien, and what little there is does involve Frodo Baggins and how he came to live with his Uncle, Bilbo Baggins.
Still, Wood says he would jump at the chance to slip on the furry Hobbit feet again, ”if [Frodo] should show up, it would actually be the perfect way to revisit because it could be small enough that I could go back and have a nice sort of reunion with the memories that I have of the experience.”
I’m not crazy of a whole film bridging the gap between The Hobbit and the existing trilogy, but I would love to see Frodo show up, even if it’s for a small passing of the baton. Then again, I still want Ian Holm to play Bilbo, just because that’s what the previous movies established. I guess I’m just stuck in what the original trilogy accomplished and I’m hoping the new movies won’t tarnish that.

Whilst I'm exited about 'the hobbit' movie, and doubly exited of the possibilty of it being a two parter, I am also a bit worried about the idea of a bridge movie...
What would be the main plot arc of such a second movie? Everyone instantly says 'the white council'. Well er... The white council attack on dol guldur occours During the hobbit not afterwards, infact it's the reason for Gandalf leaving the dwarves and bilbo at mirkwood. It would make much more sense, and make better sense as a film, if this was reinserted into 'the hobbit' much as parts of LOTR not seen directly in the books were reinserted in the films in the correct chronological place.
Here's an attempt at listing plot points for a two part 'hobbit and the necromancer' story credit goes to pentirr at the hobbit movie forum:
Film 1:
Some early history explaining who the necromancer is & dol Guldur
Gandalf exploring the dungeons of the necromancer at Dol Guldur finds thrain & is given the map,
Cuts to 'present day' Gandalf meeting Bilbo, unexpected party, Thorin voiceover to a flashback of Smaug attacking the lonely mountain, with the dwarves escaping.
Dwarves and Bilbo travelling, Gandalf leaves to an unexpected meeting with Radagast representing the white council, letting him know Sarumans’ change of heart towards an attack on Dol Guldur.
The Dwarves & Bilbo encounter the trolls, Gandalf returns.
Arrive at Rivendell, Bilbo gets to be rather in awe of the elves (he has led a rather sheltered life after all) and Elrond and Gandalf can have some rather serious talks, Elrond worries that their attack on Dol Guldur will be too late, it'd be nice to get in the fact that Galadriel wanted Gandalf to lead the council in somewhere.
They set off, in the mountains rocks thrown around by the storm giants, heavy rain, go in the cave to hide and then are attacked by goblins, lead to the leader, Gandalf sets them free and they are led away, are attacked and Bilbo is knocked on head, blackness falls.
Bilbo comes to in cave on his own, meets Gollum, finds ring, escapes from caves. He wanders around lost, before spotting the dwarves and Gandalf, cuts to them talking and him reappearing.
They try to get away but end up hiding in the trees from the wolves, Gandalf sets the wolves on fire and the goblins try to burn the trees down. They are saved by the eagles and taken to the eagles nest, Gandalf talks in the distance to the eagle’s king, with the dwarves and Bilbo talking amongst themselves.
Meet Beorn, a nice chance to mention Radagast (in the white council), they stay at Beorns, which would most likely be speeded up so the events take place only a night or so.
Arrive at Mirkwood, Gandalf sets off to join the attack on Dol Guldur, the council are aided slightly by the wood elves ( with Legolas leading a small band) Meanwhile the dwarves are off on their own way through mirkwood, and taking a lot longer about it. Bombur falls asleep, they try to get food from the elves, are attacked by spiders and eventually captured by the elves (with gandalf and the white council having left the elven king’s halls)
The white council Begins the attack on Dol Guldur whilst the dwarves are escaping.
The dwarves arrive in laketown and see the lonely mountain as the necromancer is driven from dol guldur by the white council.
(film ends with shot of dwarves heading to laketown and a foreboding image of the lonely mountain)
Film 2:
Flashback, The wizards arriving, blue wizards in the background. (galadriel voiceover)
the white council are dealing with the aftermath of dol guldur and what will happen next, gandalf explains the importance of the quest of erebor. Saruman seeks to reassure them whilst Galadriel says that Sauron has only been driven from Dol Guldur and will flee to mordor, which he has secretly been rebuilding, to regain power there.
The dwarves deal with the commotion in lake town and then set off.
The dwarves reach the mountain, and after a lot of false starts, saying how long they've been there they find the secret entrance, Bilbo steals from smaug.
Smaug burns the mountain.
Gandalf arrives at the wood elf king's halls finds out the dwarves have been there, talks to and advises the elven king about the importance erebor, and its renewed importance when he recieves knowledge of the massing goblins, thandruil is of course wanting to get his hands on the jewels and suchlike and Gandalf is willing to let him go there knowing of the coming orc horde. Some of the white council (esp galadriel) should return with him, to allow some more honest talking whilst he advises the elven king, and should leave him to return home from here.
Bilbo meets smaug and talks with him, runs off, smaug attacks the mountain, the dwarves and bilbo lock themselves in and explore it in the dark, eventually getting out
Laketown burnt and smaug killed. The aftermath of it, arguments by the waterside, the elvenking arrives and gets to show his nicer side, (legolas is no doubt ruling in his stead) but gandalf is not shown yet.
The dwarves find out and race back to the horde.
The mountain is put under seige, argumants, bilbo gives the elven king the arkenstone, the old man is revealed to be gandalf, and bilbo is expelled from the dwarve's company.
The iron hills dwarves arrive and everything begins to unravel...
Then gandalf brings them into order and they see the coming attack
Battle of five armies, bilbo knocked out
Comes to not knowing whther they won, is told what happened, probably gandalf or a dwarf finding him instead of a random soldier. Sees the dying thorin
The return journey, fairly joyous though elrond and gandalf talk on the way home at rivendell, realising that though erebor now protects them from attack by mordor, and sauron has been driven from dol guldur, an attack would now come through Gondor, They see the younger aragorn who has been brought up at rivendell with his true idenetity concealed with some sort of gandalfian cryptic comment about him
Bilbo arrives home to the sale.
Final scene of gandalf and balin visiting, possibly seeing a young frodo.
Well, as long as we finally get to see the guy THE WHOLE FREAKIN 'TRILOGY' WAS BASED ON! (ie. Sauron)... get down & dirty, I'm easy.
2-parter...? Fine. Just lets not 'kiddify' it so much this time around... ok?
Umm, Sablicious, Sauron wasnt in the Hobbit, not really... it was really the ring.
Also, I think they could make 2 great movies here and I wouldnt complain one bit about it, the more the better. Im in agreement about Ian playing Bilbo again, he could do it, with the same wig and makeup from LOTR. It would keep continuity, and I think Jackson has the clout to keep the studios off his back about using a bigger name.
