Emily Blunt Rumored For Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice
This has been bouncing around on a couple of sites this week, so let’s talk about it. British beauty Emily Blunt has a new movie, the magnificent Edge of Tomorrow, coming out in theaters on Friday. She has dabbled in genre cinema before, tackling smart sci-fi like The Adjustment Bureau and Looper for director Rian Johnson. She has avoided making the leap to massive superhero properties to this point in her career, but all of that might change.
Emily Blunt’s name has been bandied around for a part in Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (that’s a mouthful), with The Belfast Telegraph being the latest to float the idea that the Edge of Tomorrow star could earn a role. The latest report goes so far as to say that Blunt "is said to be close to signing up" for the movie, and that sources connect the redhead to the part of Catwoman.
Let’s go over some of the reasons why this could happen. Emily Blunt has been the target of superhero properties for some time now. Years ago, she was rumored for the Ms. Marvel role in The Avengers 2 (which never materialized). Marvel also reportedly wanted the actress to play Black Widow in Jon Favreau’s Iron Man 2, though the role eventually went to Scarlett Johansson. I’m not entirely sure why the industry is hell-bent on getting Emily Blunt into a superhero costume, but her casting in a blockbuster comic-book property is beginning to feel inevitable, so why not Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice?
Here’s why not: The movie is ridiculously overcrowded with names already. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Jesse Eisenberg and Gal Gadot at the main leads (from what we can tell). Jeremy Irons and Holly Hunter have supporting roles. Ray Fisher’s down to play Cyborg in the movie, while previous Man of Steel stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane all need screen time.
Could they add Emily Blunt? Sure, if she wants it. But I can’t see them trying to introduce Catwoman, as the character already has been part of two Batman movies and her own failed solo film (with Halle Berry). Trying to work the character into Zack Snyder’s movie makes no sense, as it will only serve to remind people about Christopher Nolan’s last Dark Knight film (and that’s likely not Warner’s intention). And if they are going to bring a Batman villain into this mix, it likely would be a new Joker, or a crook we haven’t seen yet.
We were waiting for this bit of news to surface on a trade site, or get confirmation from someone tied to the production of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. But it popped up on so many other sites, we wanted to get the discussion started. It looks, from our angle, that Emily Blunt would be a longshot addition to the already massive cast. But what do you guys think?
