His Footloose co-star Julianne Hough is about to light up multiplexes as one part of the all-star ensemble gathered for Adam Shankman’s Rock of Ages. (Read our review of that film right here.) Now Kenny Wormald’s committing to his next picture, and it’s about as far from the song-and-dance world of Footloose as the young talent can get.

Wormald and Project X star Jonathan Daniel Brown have signed on to star in Kid Cannabis, a drama John Stockwell (Blue Crush, Turistas) plans to write and direct. Deadline says Stockwell takes his inspirations from a Rolling Stone article about misguided entrepreneurs who try to smuggle marijuana into Idaho from British Columbia. Given the fact that movies need dramatic tension, we’re going to guess that things don’t go according to plans for Brown and Wormald.

Stockwell’s been busy as of late closing a deal with The Weinstein Company to distribute his Code Name Geronimo, a hunt-for-Bin-Laden thriller that TWC hopes to get into theaters ahead of Kathryn Bigelow’s similar Zero Dark Thirty. Look for Geronimo in theaters this fall.

Wormald, meanwhile, remains our choice to play Johnny Castle in Lionsgate’s delayed reboot of the romance classic Dirty Dancing. Yes, the late Patrick Swayze created some massive, massive shoes to fill for any young talent daring enough to tackle the role. But from what we saw of Wormald in Craig Brewer’s winning Footloose, he just might be the guy for the job. Maybe after stretching his acting muscles in Cannabis, he’ll get his dance back on for Dirty. Or maybe it’s just a pipe dream. Time will tell.
