Interview: Nicolas Cage On His Upcoming Projects

By Katey Rich: 2008-09-04 19:30:59
Interview: Nicolas Cage On His Upcoming Projects Nicolas Cage has talked about how he's trying to open up his acting career to more countries and more international flavor, and it seems safe to say he's succeeded. The star of this weekend's Bangkok Dangerous discussed many of his upcoming projects in a phone interview earlier this week, and the list is as diverse as you'd expect from the star of Raising Arizona and Face-Off, The Weather Man and Ghost Rider.

The star, having tackled one comic book hero in Ghost Rider, is about to move on to another comic book adaptation with Kick-Ass, based on Mark Millar's novel. Cage said he deeply identified with the main character, a boy who styles himself a superhero. “I am that kid. I'm the kid that would dress up like a superhero and sneak out of the house and pretend I was fighting crime. [The film] was a good match.”

And, as different from kid superheroes as you can get, Nicolas Cage will also be playing the titular character in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans, Werner Herzog's revamp, remake, or something of Abel Ferrara's film. Cage says he hasn't talked to Harvey Keitel, who originated the role in Ferrara's film, because two movies are so different. “I feel that Harvey did what he had to do, and I have to do what I have to do. We're two different actors, so it's a very different experience.” But Cage had high praise for Herzog's notoriously unusual style of directing. “Werner has a unique vision. He comes into a movie with a definite sense of control and approach that is almost not like anyone else in the world. I was looking for somebody who would give me an experience that would be new. “

And, as we reported yesterday, a Ghost Rider 2 may also be in the cards. “We talked about going international with that character, taking him into Europe, going on a motorcycle tour through Europe. connecting with the church, if you can believe that. It has elements of it that are very much in the zeitgeist, like The Da Vinci Code and things like that.

All in a day's work, right? Check in later for Cage's thoughts on making Bangkok Dangerous, including what it's like to be filming a movie with fake guns, and be told that real guns might fire back.
