Michael Gondry’s next picture, Be Kind Rewind, just may take performance art to the next level. If the movie doesn’t, then there’s a pretty good chance this new trailer, starring Gondry himself, will.
The movie stars Jack Black and Mos Def as two bumbling video store clerks who inadvertently erase all of the tapes they have in supply. The duo then take it upon themselves to recreate those classic movies and film their recreations – you know, because customers would never notice the difference. Eventually their recreations become more popular than the originals.
So here’s the meta-level of the trailer. It’s presented as if something happened to the trailer for Be Kind Rewind, so now Gondry recreates the trailer, playing both the Jack Black and Mos Def roles, as well as others (and the roles that Black and Def recreate). It’s definitely a surreal experience to watch – particularly because of Gondry’s thick accent as he tries to sound like the two lead actors.
