Goyer Gives Updates On Comic Flicks

Goyer Gives Updates On Comic Flicks David Goyer has had his best successes with comic book movies, so it’s good that he’s filling his plate with more. He’s currently working on film adaptations for characters of both of the major comic book publishers; Magneto for Marvel and Green Arrow (or Super Max) for DC. He gave Wizard Universe a quick update on both of these projects.

Magneto, which follows the young adventures of the X-Men villain, has entered preproduction, with site scouting going on and budgets being laid out. What’s interesting to me is that even though the movie is Magneto, Goyer describes it as ”the origin of the X-Men, with Magneto and Charles Xavier.” I know Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart aren’t going to be a part of the movie, but for some reason the idea of Xavier being in the movie as well as Magneto excites me a little bit, like there’s some hope for story continuity to be maintained, instead of just spinning Magneto off as some young mutant hero.

What Goyer seems more excited about is the Super Max project, which finds Green Arrow in prison with supervillains having to fight his way out. Although Goyer hasn’t even turned in the script yet, he seems excited about the opportunity to use DC’s third tier villains, calling their obscurity, ”part of the fun.” Apparently DC approved the use of the characters on a case-by-case basis, that probably being whether they could use the character elsewhere in the foreseeable future. Actually, that’s not a bad idea. What else are they going to do with characters like Goyer’s own Icicle, a character from his days writing on JSA?

Although I initially wasn’t sold on either project, Goyer’s enthusiasm is a bit contagious. If he can translate that enthusiasm onto the screen, both Magneto and Super Max look like they might have some potential.
