Hail Caesar Winstone!

Hail Caesar Winstone! There’s been some more talk about Steven Soderbergh’s Cleopatra 3-D rock opera picture, a project the director is calling Viva Las Vegas meets Tommy.” I’m actually glad to hear him using a comparison that absurd - it means the project is really going to be as outlandish as it sounds conceptually.

The Catherine Zeta-Jones / Hugh Jackman project has another name added to the mix, to play one of the most famous rulers of all time. Ray Winstone (Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull) has joined the project as Julius Caesar, Soderbergh announced to MTV Movies Blog. He also reminded us that Jackman isn’t 100% official yet, with the director waiting by the phone for confirmation that Wolverine will be his Marc Antony.

The director also talked briefly about the plans for filming the movie, which will be set in the 1920s. Along the lines of classic musicals, Soderbergh is planning on shooting on sound stages instead of making any sort of trip down the Nile.

I still say this project sounds like a huge punchline, but I hope Soderbergh can pull it off. It sounds like he has a real passion for the project. Let’s just hope that passion is something accessible to audiences.
