The movie Troll may top my list of favorite cult classic movies. If it’s not at the top it’s only because Bruce Campbell has it trumped somewhere. I mean, the movie has everything: Julia Louis Dreyfuss as a wood nymph. Sony Bono as a swinger. And who knew that June Lockhart looked so hot when she took her hair down? Plus, the movie has added camp value now that the hero’s name (Harry Potter) has become so significant. The sequel, which had nothing to do with Troll or trolls at all was useless, but Troll is cool.
As with all things cool, now the Hollywood machine wants to get their claws on it and remake it. Modernize it. Contemporize it. Reinvent and reuse. At least that’s the news Bloody Disgusting has managed to acquire. Unfortunately, all they’ve gotten their hands on so far is the following plot, which shows a little bit of how the story will be changed:
”The film is about a young boy enters a parallel world of wizards and magic where he befriends a good witch. Soon the boy learns that he must save the world from an evil Troll/Wizard that has the ability to hide his essence within the bodies of others.”
That’s actually not that different from the original, except that he doesn’t enter the parallel world until the final battle and he befriends someone who turns out to be a good witch, and the troll wizard isn’t hiding his essence in the bodies of others as much as he’s rebuilding his kingdom. But you know, besides that everything is the same (sheesh). I just hope someone puts their foot down and makes a ballsy move by keeping the family names the same. Sure, viewers will rip them apart for the Harry Potter reference, but then they can point out they had the name first.

Josh, you just seriously earned some respect in my eyes, when the Harry Potter books were first published and gaining notoriety, I said "Harry Potter is the kid from 'Troll'!" (played by Atreyu himself, Noah Hathaway)... cool to see someone else remembers this little gem, I loved this movie as a kid, esp the befriending of the creepy old lady who turns out to be a cool-as-hell good witch (yelling at the trees to "Stop it!" was great), and then theres the truly touching section with Phil Fondacaro as a man looking for a world to fit into and, in a moment of compassion, the Troll provides , calling him "brother" as he ushers him into his realm of fantasy where he can finally belong... now what other cult movie can claim that?
Hey Kristopher - Josh didn't write this one. I did.
I totally agree with you about Phil Fondacaro's role. It's probably one of my favorite parts of the movie. I particularly love his poetry reading and the music that's being played with it.
Sorry Rafe guess I wasnt paying attention, Im usually on the ball too. Nice to dip back into the memory pool once in a while and relive some good ones, Ill have to rent this... or is it availble on DVD? Hmmm...
It is available on DVD. It's a double feature, packaged with the completely unrelated Troll 2. Spare yourself the agony of the sequel, but it's worth having the first one lying around.
Actually, when June Lockhart turned away from the camera and let her hair down, when she turned around again it was not June, but her VERY HOT (and 30 years younger) daughter, Anne Lockhart playing the younger version of Eunice St. Clair. I've seen her at some conventions, and Anne Lockhart is STILL HOT!
