I’m sitting in the Salt Lake City airport right now, attempting to finish up my Sundance coverage, and this just flashed across my screen: Heath Ledger is dead.
There are no real details at this time, only that the New York Times is reporting he was found unconscious in an apartment building around 2:00 this afternoon by a masseuse and a housekeeper who had an appointment with him. They tried to wake him, were unsuccessful, called the police who say they found pills near his body.
Pills near his body is not a good sign, but whatever happened here this is an incredible shock. Heath Ledger? He just never seemed like the type. I’m not even sure what to say, this is still sinking in. Maybe some of you will have better words than I do. Post them in the comments section below.
Heath Ledger is gone. Really gone. America has lost one of its most talented actors. Batman has lost his Joker. More sad details as they appear.

I'm not really sure why, but for some reason I have an overwhelming sense of grief at this news. I agree, he was a great actor and I think he had so much potential that the world was just begining to really see. It's sad to see somebody like that go so early, especially by the means that the Times and other sources are reporting. It's a bit reminiscent of River Phoenix, isnt' it?!
OMFG
He was supposed to be in the Dark Knight sequel.. No one can play the Joker like he can....
RIP We hope you find the peace in death you apparently could not find in life.

Oh, NO...I'm so upset that my life is so empty that I have to care so much about celebrities, and am such a loser that I live through vicariously through them. And then when one kicks it, I'm just torn to shreds. Oh the humanity!!
all i can say is WOW, I am so sad. he was such a talented actor, and he will be missed. He was one of my favorite male actors, and I will miss him. my thought go out to his daughter who will never get to know her father.
I don't really have any special words to say, only that today's world makes less and less sense to me every single day. Today is a big one that doesn't make sense. I was a fan of Heath's work, he was incredibly talented and I liked every movie that I've seen him in (you owe it to yourself to go rent "Candy"). Today the world and especially his fans lost some very special . My heart goes out to all of you who grieve with me today, whether silently or with words and tears. For his family, especially his daughter Matilda, I feel most sad. That poor little girl will never know her father. My prayers go out to those who knew him personally and loved him like the public never could.
What a shock!!! One of the most talented actors on the screen today. How sad that his little girl will never know him. You could see how much he loved her. Deaths do come in threes.....Brad Renfro, Suzanne Pleshette, now Heath Ledger. The entertainment world has lost a great asset. My thought and prayers to his family and friends.
I was watching TV a little over 2 hours ago, when it came across the tv screen that he was found dead a little after 2pm, and pronounced dead at 3:46. IN SHOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what are you doing on a film fan website if you can't appreciate the artists who work in the medium and the pleasure they bring into people's lives?
anyone's death is a tragedy to the people who have been positively affected by them. this stands whether you knew a person personally or whether you were affected by their work.
when you sober up, go jeer at someone's funeral nearby; see how that works out for ya.
i really really enjoyed heaths work........very very sad. he will be remembered as a fantastic actor and a hunmble person.GOD be with his family and loved ones.heath stood for something.....he never fell for anything.........peace paul south africa
I am so shocked by this tragedy. I am also shocked by how sad it has made me. What a waste of such a young talent. Thoughts to family and especially Michelle and Matilda.
He will live on through his amazing acting - hope he is left to rest by the media
what a sad day in the world! :-( heath was one of my favorite actors and his life was cut way to short! his role as the joker would have most undoubted catapulted him to hollywood greatness! you will be missed!
This death has effected me more than any other actor's death ever has. Heath Ledger had amazing talent and great potential, and I just cannot believe we have lost him. I indeed shed some tears. Though wouldn't it be Australia's lost, though the American film industry. But it was more than that, he just had something about him that was special. Rest in peace Heath, you will be forever remembered and missed. <3
