I’m not a life-long Transformers fan like many people out there, but I still appreciated this summer’s Transformers movie. The thing that drew me the most into the movie was how absolutely stunning the visual effects were. It honestly felt like there were some giant freakin’ robots destroying the city in the film’s climax. It appears the folks at ILM think there’s some room for improvement, however, as they told Sci Fi Wire to expect more from the upcoming sequel.
”We want to improve on some of the processes that we did," said Scott Farrar, the visual effects supervisor behind the movie. "I think what we're going to do is get faster and know our problems sooner and quicker. And then, of course, I know Michael's always thinking about new, crazy actions. And we're open to that.”
That’s not to say Farrar thinks the first movie was bad by any means. It was a learning experience for the visual effects supervisor if nothing else. And, of course, the things they learned in making the first movie then become part of the second picture.
The good news is, it sounds like Farrar and his team want the second picture to be just as strong from a story standpoint as the first one – not just an excuse to put flashy effects on the screen: ”I think the commitment is not to just chuck out a sequel. The commitment is—and this makes us really happy here—that it's a deep story. There are lots of layers to the story of all these Decepticons, everybody. And so they want to really keep the characters rich."
Paramount announced a tentative release date for Transformers 2 last week of June 26th, 2009.
