Is Pixar Planning A Cars Sequel?

By Rafe Telsch: 2007-07-14 15:07:23
Is Pixar Planning A Cars Sequel? Kachow! There’s a rumor circulating that Lightning McQueen and the rest of the rowdy bunch from Radiator Springs may be making another lap around the track with a follow up to 2006’s Cars. The news comes from blog JV Pixar News who claims to have “a very reliable anonymous source” who has told them a Cars sequel will be Pixar’s follow up to Toy Story 3, putting two sequels out as back to back releases.

Personally, I’m going to remain highly skeptical on this. In recent weeks it feels like there have been endless reminders from the Pixar camp that they are not in the sequel business; sequels are not part of the Pixar business plan. The only sequel they’ve put out to date are to Toy Story, which were both Disney-initiated, not spawned by John Lasseter, who was behind Cars. Besides, if Pixar was to spin another tale based on any of their existing movies, I would think Cars would be pretty far down the list. The close of the story didn’t leave much to follow up on. Brad Bird’s Incredibles would be a more likely candidate, although Bird provided one of the recent reminders of Pixar not being interested in sequels.

The blog goes on to consider if this could be Brad Lewis’s unannounced project, which the Ratatouille producer recently hinted at. I find that hard to believe as well, since Lewis wasn’t really involved with Cars. I don’t think Lasseter would just hand the reigns over for his own creation.

Nope. I’m 100% skeptical about this, despite a “very reliable” source. If news is going to be forthcoming, it’ll most likely be announced at Comic-Con, though, so if I’m wrong I’ll get to admit it in just a few weeks.

  • yea,

Cars is the main thing Pixar is good for. If they don't make another movie, that's just stupid.

my sons watch that movie every other day, they'd watch it every day if we let them. They don't watch toy story every day... nope... they don't watch ratouille, they saw it once, got bored, mom and dad finished the movie. They don't watch incredibles every day... nope, they aren't old enough for that nonsense.

Pixar not making another cars is like McDonalds saying they aren't going to make another hamburger.

  • Im a single 32 year old guy and I dig on Cars, Im not embarrased to say it. Thanks to that movie, I got into highway and road history and learned a lot about the many historic US highways that were either truncated (shortened) or decommisioned out in California where I live. I even took a long ten hour road trip to Las Vegas and took pictures of highway shields along the way, including route 66 in Barstow.

As far as the story goes, there is plenty that they could go with. For example, McQueen helped Radiator Springs get "back on the map", therefore an ideal storyline for the movie would be how the town deals with growth and potential sprawl and all the potential problems that come with it. Perhaps a new hot shot rival to McQueen could be introduced, sponsored by a big-box retailer (think wal-mart) that wants to build a store in Radiator Springs, potentially threatening all the local businesses like Flo's Cafe and Luigi's casa della tires and such.

Sherrif could be training a couple of street wise ford mustang type deputies from the big city, Fillmore could befriend a couple of hybrids, who knows. There is just too much they could use to not come up with something good if not better than the original.
  • I completely agree with you all, my son started watching this before the age of one and is OBSESSED. when we go to the store, he will see something 'cars' a mile away, haha just like momkim said. i think i have had to listen to that movie play atleast 500 times if not more. They need to make a sequel!!!!!
  • I'm a sap who loves this movie as much as my son if not more. Some think there isn't a story to be told for Cars 2, but come on! they ended the flick w/ Lightning making Radiator Springs the new official Home of his Rusteze team..."put'n it back on the map"...how hard is it to start out w/ that premise and steer McQueen back to the Piston Cup season w/ everyone back and add some new characters...namely a new hotshot for Dinoco. Chick will be mad. my son is 3 and got the movie before he was 2...in the first 6 months, the boy would want nothing but Cars, 6 times a day! now it's on occassion but still a family fav. $$$ runs the show and no one can deny the success. I'm not saying today, but maybe in the next 5 years...Come On Disney Pixar
  • My 6 year old has been obsessed with Cars since the movie was in theaters. We've also been wondering about the possibility of a sequel too. The end of the movie lends itself to a sequel, and MaterNational (the sequel to the original Cars video game) introduces some new car characters to the familiar character mix. They've also come out with new die cast characters. Most of this could of course just be a way to milk more $ out of the franchise, but our family still hopes for a big screen sequel.
  • I really hope that there will be a sequel to CARS. My son who is only 20 mths old (started watching it when he was less than a yr. old) has been watching that movie over, and over, and over in our vehicle. It doesn't matter if we are in the car for 10 mins or 10 hrs he wants to watch that movie. Once in a while he will want Barnyard movie put in but then its back to CARS. So for my sanity I beg them to have a sequel. Actually it is a really cute show and I do enjoy the humor in it. Its a nice wholesome movie that has no fighting, magic, or sorcery in it - which is great. And I agree with karenowensquip that they SHOULD make a sequel because if other 1 - 2 yr old boys have the same interests as my son, and they can spot any item with the CARS logo within a 1/2 mile radius (lol), they will be pulling in a crap load of money!!
  • A sequel to CARS would be a smash hit. The original movie made in '06 has recently became very popular again. Cars merchindise has returned to the shelves of department stores, selling big. Children are in love with this movie, my son especially, I even enjoy watching it over and over again. They might not be in the bussiness of sequels, but they should be in the bussiness of listening to the fans, scince thats where the money, sales and profit come from!
  • I want a cars sequel!!!!!!! I think they are making a sequel there just not telling us!
  • Im not really sure but I've heard the pixar company is making a toy story 3.
