James Gunn's Favorite Marvel Movie Since Iron Man
The early response to Ant-Man ahead of its release later this month has been positive. There have been one or two naysayers, but most of those who have been privy to the latest Marvel adventure insist that it’s a rollicking entertaining ride. And now it has secured arguably it’s most positive reaction to date from none other than Guardians Of The Galaxy writer/director James Gunn.
Gunn, who is currently working hard on the sequel to the hugely enjoyable and successful 2014 original, took to his Facebook page to pay high compliments to Peyton Reed Ant-Man. In fact he even went as far as to insist that it’s his favorite Marvel film since Jon Favreau’s Iron Man all the way back in 2008. But, for good taste, he did leave Guardians Of The Galaxy out of the running. Wrote the filmmaker,
But what did Gunn find so endearing about Ant-Man that made it better than the likes of The Avengers, Thor and Captain America: The Winter Solider, just to name a few? Well, simply put, Gunn loved the fact that it was simple. However, rather than giving the film a backhanded compliment, he also made sure to praise its elegance, before adding that while it feels like it’s part of the Marvel universe it isn't "ruled by that fact."
Gunn didn’t stop there with his praise. We went on to write that Paul Rudd is "nuanced," "charming," "funny," and is a "surprisingly natural fit as a modern superhero," while he also reserved special praise for Judy Greer, Michael Douglas, and made the bold prediction that Michael Pena will become a huge star because of his performance.
James Gunn also spoke highly of both Peyton Reed and Edgar Wright too. Gunn wrote that Ant-Man director Reed’s career has been building to this creation, while he also insisted that the Shaun Of The Dead filmmaker’s presence is dotted across the screen, even though the Englishman dropped out of the project over a year ago.
You can read James Gunn’s reaction in full below. It’s certainly worth the two minutes it will take for you to peruse.
We’re still over two weeks away from Ant-Man’s arrival, but the fact that Marvel allowed reviewers and anyone who saw the blockbuster to reveal their thoughts on the film way before it actually hit screens shows just how much confidence they have in the project. And this marketing maneuver means that a nice buzz and word of mouth for the film has now started to emerge. We’ll see how it plays when the movie hits theaters on July 17th.
