Julianne Moore Confirmed As President Coin In The Hunger Games: Mockingjay

In The Hunger Games and soon in Catching Fire, Donald Sutherland has created an indelible portrait of evil power as President Snow, the leader of a government so cruel that it keeps its people in check by sending children to fight to the death in the Hunger Games. But it's time for another person to take on a position of power and challenge Snow, so naturally that person is… Julianne Moore?

Believe it! As rumored way back in June, Julianne Moore has signed on to the two-part The Hunger Games: Mockingjay as President Alma Coin, "the leader of the rebellion against the Capitol." My spoiler-senses are tingling, since it's hard to get into much detail about her or Mockingjay period without majorly spoiling what happens in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Suffice it to say that if you've read the book, you know how important Coin's role is. If you haven't, well, all the more for you find out when the first half of the movie opens November 21, 2014 and the second half arrives November 20 the next year. Yes, Harry Potter started the ridiculous trend of cutting the final book in a popular series into two films, and we all have to live with the consequences.

Before we can get around to Mockingjay and Alma Coin, though, we've got Catching Fire and its November 22 opening to look forward to. If you're in the Los Angeles area you've hopefully already entered our giveaway to win two tickets to the film's November 18 premiere. Other recent tidbits about the film include the release of the Codplay single "Atlas" from the soundtrack, and a giant banner of all the victors lined up against a dramatic pink sky (fans of the book remember that sky!). You can also just cut to the chase and check out the newest trailer below. Hopefully it'll only be a few weeks before someone digs through Julianne Moore's previous films and gives us a super cut preview of what her confrontations with Katniss will look like in Mockingjay. Come on, Internet, I know you can do it!
