After the release of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the DC Extended Universe is still very much up in the air. While Zack Snyder helped with forming the beginnings of the shared universe, the mixed reception for Batman v Superman has led to some unanswered questions and some serious changes within Warner Brothers. One of the big question marks within the DCEU is the highly anticipated Justice League movie, which will bring together all of the major players of the Universe. Just yesterday, a list of rumored titles for the film was leaked, leading to much speculation regarding the plot. Now DC film’s head honcho Geoff Johns has spoken out, and gotten to the truth of the matter.
There you go, ladies and gents. This statement, which comes to us from Geoff Johns’ personal twitter seems to confirm the official title of the Justice League’s big screen debut. That film will be called simply Justice League.
The rumors of a new Justice League title seem to echo what is happening over at Marvel studios. While Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and 2 have been announced for quite some time, recent reports indicate that the films will have new titles. Since Justice League: Part One and Two is similarly simple and non-creative, it seems logical that at least one of the studios will be changing their titles.
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been around far longer than the DCEU, there are already some stark similarities between the two studios. Both comic juggernauts recently released films which focused on collateral damage and the consequences of superheroics, resulting in fellow heroes coming to blows by the end of it. Now they’ll both be released two-part films which revolve around individual heroes teaming up to fight a larger threat.
Geoff Johns’ tweet may have confirmed Justice League’s title, but that’s about all he’s revealed. The rumored titles that broke the internet yesterday all seemed to focus on the plot and larger conflict of the film; Justice League: Gods Among Us would seemingly focus on an alternate future, tying in Flash’s strange future cameo from Batman v Superman. Justice League: United is simple, but would indicate most of the film revolving around Batman assembling the heroes. Alas, all we know is that Justice League will feature the titular team. Bummer.
It should be interesting to see how the success of Suicide Squad affects the DC Extended Universe moving forward. Both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice were met with fairly negative reviews, despite their financial success. Suicide Squad thus far has been getting pretty great early reviews, and the hype around the villain-centric film has only continued to grow in passing months. After the morose and dark tone of the previous films, Suicide Squad’s playful and comedic tone may be exactly what the DCEU is missing. If it goes well, then we may be getting more humor in Justice League.
