Marvel's Spider-Man Movie May Have This Title
The upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe-set Spider-Man movie doesn't have a title yet... and it will be interesting to see what it winds up settling on. After all, the simple elegance of just calling it Spider-Man was taken by Sam Raimi's trilogy, and the short-lived Amazing Spider-Man series took the second best option available. So what will the next big screen incarnation be called? Spectacular Spider-Man? Superior Spider-Man? Ultimate Spider-Man? Well, if a new rumor is to be believed, then the film may be called Spider-Man: The New Avenger.
This story has been put online by movie reporter and frequent rumor source Umberto Gonzalez, who claims to have gotten unconfirmed information about the in-development collaboration between Marvel Studios and Sony. If it turns out to be true, it would fit in with Marvel's past title, specifically the first Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger.
At this point it's obviously way too early to start making assumptions about whether or not this is true, but it is worth noting that the name Spider-Man: The New Avenger does kind of fit with some of the other rumors that we've been hearing about the 2017 feature. Specifically, there was a story that came out a couple months ago that said that the movie would co-star Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and have Tony Stark leading the young wall-crawler through a series of tests to see whether or not he has what it takes to become one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Of course, that rumored plotline was pitched by the same source as this new story, so it remains questionable.
Before the 2017 movie, the Marvel Cinematic Universe's new version of Spider-Man will be featured in Joe and Anthony Russo's Captain America: Civil War - which will be starting production in the next few weeks. It has not yet been announced who will be playing the new version of the web-slinger, though recent reports have said that the shortlist of actors has been narrowed down to Asa Butterfield, Nat Wolff, Tom Holland, Liam James, and Timothee Chalamet. It has also been reported that Marvel and Sony are looking at The Cabin In The Woods director Drew Goddard to helm the solo film, having served as creator on the Daredevil Netflix series and developed the Sinister Six feature, but that news has not yet been confirmed.
