The Original Ghostbusters Is Heading Back To Theaters, Get The Details

Sony Pictures is gearing up for the release of arguably its biggest movie of the summer, Ghostbusters. Based on the 1984 classic, the new film follows a new team of paranormal investigators as they attempt to protect New York City from all manner of ghosts and ghouls. While it’s still unclear how this movie fits into the Ghostbusters timeline (if it does at all), Sony is hoping to introduce a new generation to the Ghostbusters franchise. That seems to be the basis for their decision to re-release the original film in a special two-night event in order to get fans both old and new excited for the reboot.

This news comes from Entertainment Weekly who report that Sony Pictures has teamed up with Fathom Events and will be re-releasing the original Ghostbusters in select theaters on June 8 – the anniversary of its original release in 1984. The film will play in 750 theaters across the country and there will be an encore showing on June 12.

If that wasn’t enough for you then there’s an entirely different Ghostbusters event going on. BBQ Films will be hosting an immersive Ghostbusters experience for three nights – starting on June 8 – in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The event will take place in a giant warehouse that BBQ Films will transform into Ghostbuster HQ. Fans will be able to "strap on a proton pack, hang with some ghosts, and of course screen the original film."

That’s a lot of Ghostbusters. The reception to the new all-female Ghostbusters movie hasn’t exactly been met with many appraisals on the internet. It’s the most disliked trailer on Youtube with 507, 610 dislikes – which doesn’t seem like a lot, but even the new Fantastic Four only got 20,175 dislikes. With all this mixed buzz surrounding the movie, Sony might be hoping that the re-releases of the original film will get people in a better mood and hopefully catch some Ghostbusters fever. Regardless, the events sound like a treat to any fans of the original motion picture.

The new Ghostbusters mirrors the story of the original films in which three paranormal scientists, Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy), Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig), and Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinon) team up with Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) to study and capture ghosts, and eventually save New York City from a supernatural disaster.

If you'd like a list of theaters the event is playing or to buy some tickets then you can do so here: FathomEvents.com and BBQ Films. The all-new Ghostbusters will arrive in theaters this summer on July 15.
