Owen Wilson Won't Be Walking On Air

By Ed Perkis: 2008-04-14 17:20:09
Owen Wilson Won't Be Walking On Air One of the most underrated early 1980’s television shows, The Greatest American Hero, is going to be adapted into a movie, as we noted in February. One of the names that has been rumored to be on the top of the list to play Ralph Hinkley (William Katt in the television series) is Owen Wilson. I can even see the Butterscotch Stallion with the requisite perm.

Alas, according to Moviehole, it is not to be. The movie is going forward, but without everyone’s favorite suicidal Wilson brother involved. The website cites an unnamed casting agent claiming Wilson is no longer being considered. " They're casting it for now - they're open to an unknown,” the source said. I don’t really see that as a big problem. As long as the actor has some charisma and a sense of humor, there are lots of options available.

The source also provided some other plot details along with the info on Owen Wilson. The film will be a comedy in the same vein as the original series. Ralph Hinkley will be a teacher and his students will include Pam Davidson’s son. Pam, played by on television by the luscious Connie Selleca, was Ralph’s love interest. There is also mention of a “super-villain” and another teacher who causes problems from Ralph. No word on the key character of FBI Agent Bill Maxwell (Robert Culp on TV) and who might play him. That show has always been about Maxwell for me, so hopefully they get someone good.

  • Ah, that makes more sense. But, if it helps any, I'd advise here and MH that they also check from time to time if these rumors fall around the time "TGAH 2008" (www.tgah.com) says anything anywhere. This can be done through a Google search as well.

This movie rumor/TGAH 2008 news has happened a few times lately, so I do not trust any rumors mentioned (plus, seriously the powers should be questioned alone. DC really sued for Superman, even though Green Lantern would've been closer - though not exact - as far as a similarity). "TGAH 2008" if mentioned, is also a female suit wearer, not Ralph Hinkley. :)

(Also, MelMac is an amalgamation. I chose the name before I realized it was ALF's homeworld - and plastic pottery. Not a huge fan of the show, but my opinion about him eating cats, people will complain just like they did with Gary Larson's "The Far Side" cartoons with "tethercat" and one where the cat's tied up and hung by its tail by the dog. ;) )
  • Que ce soit celui qui il puisse être. ;)

Seriously though, as you said in your last post. It may be true it may not be. What Melmac and myself are basically saying is there may very well be a movie OR there may very well be people getting confused with the fan film project called TGAH 2008 which is only that, a fan film project. Which unfortunately at the moment doesn't look like anything worth taking a chance and possibly ruining the idea or future for a legit movie.

    Acceptons d'être en désaccord. Oui ? :)
  • Ah well if you're a fan then that obviously makes you a more legitimate, qualified source than anything MovieHole or Cinema Blend might have come up with Melmac.

I look forward to seeing your head explode when someone starts running out Alf movie rumors. It's inevitable! Do you think they'll still have him eating cats, or is that too cruel for modern audiences?

    ;)

All I'll say about MH is this... if they have something they're not sure of they generally make it clear that the story is only a rumor. We do the same. MH seems to be stating this as fact, and they don't normally do that unless they're sure.

They could be wrong, anyone could be. He could have been mislead by even a good source. It happens. But in the absence of any compelling evidence to the contrary I'm going to run with what MH has to say on it because of their track record.

Now there are other sites who, if they'd run this same story I would definitely be inclined to doubt. MH is usually better about that than most though.
  • Plus, I will concede that Moviehole does have some legit stories, but this one, based on what I've seen in the past few months with a fanfilm production that's being made for the Internet (which has some questionable issues of its own), reads as highly doubtful.

I would say, don't trust everything you read. This one is something I'd hold off on.

Apparently you're very new to reading news. Most of the time when you have a source like this, they only give you the information on the condition of anonymity. Moviehole is not going to give you a name. Get over it.

You can either choose to believe they know what they are talking about or not, but since you don't know the name of their source you are in no position to judge whether or not it is a good source. If you have a problem with that, I suggest you go over there and take it up with them.

I on the other hand, find that generally MH knows what they're talking about. If they trust the source, then so do I.>>

Unlike the person writing the story, I do know the industry very well and know what I speak of as far as quoting sources. This story is NOT written along the lines of a legit news story, and the person must give a reason why they are speaking on anonymity or they have no protection (meaning, their names can be used).

The way this is phrased "A friend who-should-know" would make many skeptical about this story. I still am, and not just for that reason. There's not any official sources from film companies, etc. saying this was really going to happen who would at least have a snippet in Variety about the project. I've read NOTHING in that source, which I do trust as a vaild source. The information that started all these claims was a blank Web page with the information typed in - which anyone can do.

And, this is the Internet where any Tom, Dick or Cephlapod can claim to be something they're not. These are also on blog sites, which are not trustworthy news sites. I've yet to see any news about a film being made on a site such as MSNBC, AP (the best), FOX, or CNN.

That said, I do know what I'm talking about and, as a fan of the original "The Greatest American Hero," can vouch for MST3Claye's claims as far as the "TGAH 2008" endeavor and how convenient these announcements are made whenever there's zilch talk about that production.

And, there's no mistaking the coincidence about "TGAH 2008" and a "Greatest American Hero" movie being filmed in the same month. This has been noted by many, and even denied by Collazo, who is the director of the fanfilm series.

Plus, I seriously doubt that any film production would want to use some of these supposed powers for Ralph (i.e. Johnny Storm - the Human Torch power), unless they wanted to risk being sued. And, why have this Ralph get all these powers when the point of the show is that Ralph lost the instruction book and nothing worked right. I've learned from experience that people do remember the show enough to remember the hero crashed and was human. Giving him all the powers or more powers than what he had would make him more the character that DC comics tried to sue SJC over.

Now, "The A-Team" recently got a greenlight as far as it's being produced - nothing on "GAH." That is from an official news report. "GAH" is still yet to be verified on a legit news source as really being filmed.
  • thank GOD owen isnt going to do this movie. it sounds stupid!
  • MST3, I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about. Your post might as well be in French.

    Carry on.
  • Even if it's the same type of story being thrown about? I don't think the idea is questioning MH's validity but more the news story itself. You've got this story that tells the plot which I have read maybe a month ago else where, then you have normal forum posts being posted everywhere ranging from Darkhorse comics getting the rights to draw it to even DC Comics which just proves right there that it is just not true. Those stories I know for sure are talking about the fan film project mentioned above and not a legitimate Greatest American Hero movie which was created by Stephen J Cannell. Your quick reply seems to show that you're a fan of MH which is fine. MH's validity isn't being questioned, it's the news story itself and what it is possibly being confused with.
  • True, but stories like this one is popping up here and there and it's only been 7 or so months since the fan film project TGAH 2008 has been announced. The way they have done their website and what they have announced so far, they're trying to go all out on trying to make it look official. Fact is, they don't have the rights or permission from Stephen J. Cannell yet and if anyone wants to go into that. SJC's website is plastered all over the DVDs that are out there and on the bottom of the box is an All Rights Reserved.
  • Melmac,

Apparently you're very new to reading news. Most of the time when you have a source like this, they only give you the information on the condition of anonymity. Moviehole is not going to give you a name. Get over it.

You can either choose to believe they know what they are talking about or not, but since you don't know the name of their source you are in no position to judge whether or not it is a good source. If you have a problem with that, I suggest you go over there and take it up with them.

I on the other hand, find that generally MH knows what they're talking about. If they trust the source, then so do I.
  • I'm sorry JoshT, but there is no source clearly stated. Moviehole's source for the story is *NOT* SJC or a legit company, just someone saying "casting director friend today" or "a friend-who-should-know." I could claim to be a casting director, but I'm not. If they had names, then it's possible.

Plus, the original information that started this was just a generalized typing of information that even there did not cite its sources as to where they found this filming information. I have done searches on this claimed movie project, and there has been no reports from Variety or other reputible sources that make these claims valid. I've also e-mailed Cannell's group, and they said there's nothing offically going on with a "GAH" project at this time. The July filming was also proven bogus.

I also read reports that this movie was going to start filming in July, which just so happens to be the same time that the fanfilm endeavor "TGAH 2008" is supposed to start showing its episodes. Coincidence? - I do not believe for one minute that it is.

These rumors also started up when "TGAH 2008" started mentioning more of the show. If you look on their site, for all intents and purposes they look like a legit production. For a while, they even had an MPAA rating on it, which has since been removed as it's a violation of copyright to have one with no film being shown to it.

This story is full of junk information, and I would not believe it at all until there's an offical source cited, not just friends in the know. Anyone can claim to be official, but only Stephen J. Cannell and any writers he employs for a legit production can claim that.
  • Just because Moviehole didn't speak to someone in a marketing department somewhere doesn't make their source wrong. Their source is clearly stated.
  • Guys, I've said this before and I'll say this again: This is not, not NOT an official source about the project. This is the same hearsay that we've gotten for "The A-Team," which BTW is the only SJC endeavor that I know of that's proceeding as planned.

An official source is from SJC productions, not "Was speaking to a casting director friend today... According to my friend-who-should-know." I sent an E-mail to Cannell Productions and they said that they're doing something in house, but it's a WIP and nothing else.

Plus, why spoil the new story with comments such as "Pam's son" and
an evil teacher with names. Right now, I read this a lot as someone using "Sky High" ideas and theming it with "GAH." I mean, evil teacher when they had at worst mafia men and ninjas? Also, giving Ralph a Fantastic Four power when DC comics sued SJC in the '80s for thinking Ralph was Superman? (I know, "Four" is Marvel, but same cause and reason).

Again, I feel a lot of this is currently because of the fanfilm production called "TGAH 2008," and people confusing it as a legit movie being produced. Personally, I truly believe is now defunct as they've said nothing to try and attract fans and this is a way to draw attention to it. Until SJC's company says anything or it comes from an official cited source, not "Talking to a friend," don't believe this story.
  • This isn't being confused with the fan film project at http://www.tgah.com is it? That website has recently stopped seeing any activity in the past couple of months. Just don't want the fans to be confused by a real movie happening with a fan film project type deal.
