Ridley Scott On Monopoly And Blade Runner

By Rafe Telsch: 2007-08-07 16:52:50
Ridley Scott On Monopoly And Blade Runner Ridley Scott is out of his everlovin’ mind. I mean, give Gladiator an award and he goes coo-coo. First he teases people last week with the notion of a Blade Runner sequel, saying that he’d create a sequel if he saw a script he liked and suggesting people send him some ideas. Now he’s talking about creating a movie based on the board game Monopoly. What’s going on here?

Yes, you aren’t on drugs, Scott (who very well might be the one on drugs) told the L.A. Times that he was interested in the project because Monopoly is the most popular board game in the world and because of how it brings out a Jekyll and Hyde reaction in people. Since that’s funny for a family sitting around the table playing the game, Scott thinks it should make an equally entertaining movie.

I don’t know about you, but the entertaining part of Monopoly has to do with the interactions and such, not watching other people play. I have enough problems with people talking to characters on screen without having them shout, “Buy Park Place! Buy Park Place!” or laugh as they are sent to jail. How Scott intends to translate any of the game to film is beyond me. Let’s just hope he doesn’t aim for the time length of the average Monopoly game.

The one good thing about that interview is Scott clarifies his stance on the Blade Runner sequel: There is no sequel. And I intend probably never to do a sequel. . . . I like to do the first one, and if they want to do a sequel? Fine. Okay, maybe he’s a little unintelligible there, but it sounds to me like he just likes recutting the first movie over and over and has no intentions of making a sequel… unless the studio (or whoever “they” are) wants to do one, in which chase he’s fine with it. Clear as mud.
