Since making his feature directorial debut in 2003, Rob Zombie has stuck almost exclusively to the horror genre. With the exception of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto, an animated film that Zombie made in 2009, the filmmaker has stuck with his bread and butter, getting characters to chop each other up in all kinds of interesting ways. His next film, The Lords of Salem, will supposedly come out this year (no release date has been announced yet) and continues the trend, but what about Zombie's future. Apparently he's ready to make a right turn.
Deadline has learned that Rob Zombie will direct Broad Street Bullies, a movie about the notoriously thuggish Philadelphia Flyers hockey team that came into being during the 1970s. The team was famous for playing the supposedly unbeatable Soviet Union team of the time, known as the Red Army. The Flyers ended up playing so violently that the Russians wanted to quit after the first period. They did came back, however, when they were told that they wouldn't be paid unless they played the full game and the Flyers ended up winning 4-1, declaring themselves world champions.
The site says that Zombie plans to make the film something like Rocky meets Boogie Nights and has a quote from the director saying. "Each character involved is more outrageous than the next. The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale."
