See Kazakhstan's Anti-Borat Propaganda

By Josh Tyler: 2006-09-28 00:00:00
See Kazakhstan's Anti-Borat Propaganda Remember all the political uproar being caused in the real country of Kazakhstan by Sacha Baron Cohen's upcoming Borat movie? (read about it here) The Kazakhi's are not happy about they way they're being portrayed, and have even gone so far as to drag President Bush into a summit on the subject of Cohen's comedy. Borat's response of course, was that he supported his government's decision to "sue this Jew".

Well, Kazakhstan has decided to abandon all the whining and combat Borat's nation bashing by making their own movie to counteract his negativity. The strange thing is that they're doing it via a period piece called Nomad, the story of Kazakh tribes repelling Mongol invaders. Alright, maybe it'll make their ancestors look heroic, but how does that do anything to counter-punch Borat's portrayal of their country in modern times? Shouldn't the movie be about what a modern, progressive country they are now rather than about how many Mongols they've killed in the past?

The more we hear about this, the more I start to think that maybe Borat's actually right about Kazakhstan. At the very least, their government doesn’t' seem exactly smart.

Whatever it is, Nomad is set to be the most expensive film in the country's history, checking in at a hefty $40 million dollars. AICN has dug up the official site for the film, shooting now in Kazakhstan. Apparently the movie's trailer is available somewhere on it here, though like everyone else I'm having a miserable time finding it.

From the pics available on the official site, the production values look solid, and they've even cast a few known Hollywood actors in it. Jay Hernandez for instance. It may not prove anything about modern Kazakhstan, but that doesn't mean it won't be good.

  • Salamaleikum Kazakhs and others(i mean stupid americans)! I live in Kazakhstan, but work in german company, my work directly connected with english language (i'm not interpreter), and everyday I have to talk, correspond with different people from different countries, and i hate americans, bcse i never met so stupid people. Everytime when i speak to them or send a letter, they don't understand and have to explain in details several times. Sometimes we have such situations, where one man's live can depend on our work, and everytime f..... stupid americans let us down with their dullness. And I'm furious of that fact, that americans think to be a smart themselves , whilst they are f.... stupid.

Open ur eyes and visit our country, and u'll see how we r hospitable, kind, smart people and rich, big country, also u'll see how Kazakhs are very beatiful people! No girl can has equal with Kazakh girls , just visit www.youtube.com, type "Kazakh girls" and make search, and u'll see real beautiness u've never seen b4! Or just visit www.kazakh.ru for more information and u'll understand everything!

    Good luck!
  • Only stupid people can believe it's true.
As far as I can understand only americans believe it's true.
Last week I was in Malaysia, and when I said that I'm from Kazakhstan, they said "Aaa Borat", I asked - "Do you believe it's true?", they said "Of course not - but it was funny"!
So my friends - I wanna say - thanks to Borat for making us popular.
  • America is country with no past. So americans don't think about others history. And make a stupid, "tupical american comedy" films. It sad that about 20 yaers ago american writer Marta Olkot was investigating Kazakh culture, history, made a great book about us, and kazakh people loved her for everythink she did for us. But now... In one site I read about NOMAD: "If they were smart, they would have made a comedy about a dumb American going around Kazakhstan and pissing people off with his ignorance." So do you really think that smart people will do so? May be only Americans, who think that they a smart...
  • I am from the former USSR bloc and I admit that there is some truth what Borat shows - about his behavior, but not the facts. Even though all the facts about country of Kazakhstan in the movie is really really false, the generally Borat's actions and behaviors are very very true.
  • i feel bad for the kazakh people and wished a fictional country name had been used... but

the movie borat is brilliant because it plays on the racism and hate that abounds but only comes out when people feel safe. Not speaking a language well is a way to make people feel comfortable letting their tongues go.. kind of like being around someone that is deaf. you are forced to use simple language to communicate so your lose your cultural conditioning.

Then you throw in the fact that this so called dunce is extremely vulgar, racist, and pathetic and you get borat. it could be done in almost every culture in the world. the fact that a movie like this can be in america is actually a sign of our tolerance for other cultures and general open mindedness because someone that actually hated jews and homosexuals wouldn't get the joke. Only those that hated blind racism and intolerance get the joke.

  • I watched Borat and admit, I laughed very hard. Especially as an eastern European, who can relate to *some* of the things portrayed by the film, as a reminder of the now ridiculous communism was.

I agree, it is not to be taken seriously and actually it is mocking the limited people of the US/UK who have these naive thoughts about the rest of the world, more than the Kazahks.

BUT. I do see two problems:

    1. Why use a real country's name? They could have made something up, like "Boratistan", most Americans would not notice the difference anyway. I have Kazahk friends who now get mocked and have to listen to stupid comments by ignorant people when they tell them where they are from. There are a lot of stupid people out there, who took this film seriously. It is really not fair on Kazahk people, especially for the ones living in the US/UK.

    2. Do you guys really believe that it was made to mock ignorant people whilst making them laugh at the same time? The film makes us laugh because most of us have (mostly hidden) racist prejudices. That's what it boils down to. I am not racist, but if none of us were even a tiny bit prejudice, would the racist jokes make us laugh? The guy disses himself for money and is just re-defining stereotypes for the new generations, who may not have even come across them yet. I don't agree with people making money this way.
  • Hi to you anti-borats and borat-lovers. Recently I saw this movie. Absolutely hilarious! To the entire anti-borats: first of all, I'm german. How often was (even today) Germany shown as a Nazi-run-country? How often do comedians make jokes about my country (maybe we ARE funny for some people, but that doesn't interest me)? Don't worry Kazakhs, keep it easy, if you could't laugh over a parody of yourself/your country, you don't have any kind of humor. Don't be angry. It's just a funny movie - and not the end - of Kazakhstan.
  • THE ANTI BORAT IS IN ROMANIA TO DO TO THE NEW FILM WE WANT TO KILL
HIM BUT HE DOES NOT DISERVED IT
  • That's kind of cool Chronic. Were you one of the guys at the gay pride parade then? And did you have any idea who he really was?
  • borat is my love slave!!!

i was the lucky guy in his movie who got to grope him he he he ;)

    lucky me!!!
  • oh dear oh dear oh dear. grow up anti borat people, hes made up and hes taking the mick out of you, not kazakstan. you need to grow up, mature a bit and look in the mirror.
  • People are so dumb. This is a stupid film made by sasha baron cohen cause he knows this is what people in these days want to watch. And by doing this hes now making millions of dollars.
Who cares about this film, its fictional anyway.
First of all it wasn't even filmed in Kazakhstan but instead in Romania.
Second the maker of this film hasn't even been to Kazakhstan, let along has even met a real kazakh. Thirdly kazakhstan is in central asia, so oviously people in that country are mostly asians, not europeans like we see in this film.
It just shows how smart and intelligent those people are who actually takes this film seriously.
  • "I was surprised, because I always had faith in the audience that they would realise that this was a fictitious country and the mere purpose of it was to allow people to bring out their own prejudices. And the reason we chose Kazakhstan was because it was a country that no one had heard anything about, so we could essentially play on stereotypes they might have about this ex-Soviet backwater. The joke is not on Kazakhstan. I think the joke is on people who can believe that the Kazakhstan that I describe can exist - who believe that there's a country where homosexuals wear blue hats and the women live in cages and they drink fermented horse urine and the age of consent has been raised to nine years old...

  • Josh, i would only like to complain about the part of your article, where you say this film Nomad is a response to Borat... I don't know where you got that information, that film was finished two years ago, probably before Borat even started filming..
  • Josh . . . . VERY NICE!!!
  • borat is funny everyone calm down he makes fun of everythng everyone is made fun of in these times and when kazak starts to complain more other sountries will start to complain about other movies and soon a lot of funny movies will be of the shelves at ur local video store
  • For the one who said that Kazakhstan is smaller that his backyard. For your information Kazakhstan is the ninth largest country in the worlds. It has enough land to fit in the whole of Western Europe or five territories of France, whichever you prefer.

As for Borat, he has practically apologised by saying the that the joke is not on Kazakhstan, but on racist, anti-semitic, ignorant yankies. See interview with Sasha Baron Koen in The Independant.

  • bl0ss0m is right. It seems that Kazakhstan was just randomly chosen to represent Eastern Europe and some parts of Asia. Borat and his partner spoke a language between Jewish and polish, part of a song from the Emir Kosturitsa's movie "Underground" and a Bulgarian folklore song are included in the soundtrack and as I know the "Kazakhs" in the movie are actually Romanian gypsies. But I think that Mr. Cohen could do a little effort to avoid the offensive things. For example in "The terminal" movie Tom Hanks' character was from the non-existing country of "Krakozia".

In fact due to political reasons some people from Eastern Europe and Central Asia had the bad luck to face extremely bad living conditions just 2 decades ago and they really find the movie as a kind of a mocking to them. Unlike some guy from USA, for whom the whole story is science fiction and Kazakhstan is placed somewhere on the Moon.
  • You are all so dumb. Borat is making fun of everyone. Including us - dumb Americans
  • Being a southerner, I totally think that I should have been offended by the Borat movie, but... I wasn't. I wasn't offended mostly because I know that I personally am not racist, nor am I a part of a crazy evangelistic church, therefore I didn't take anything seriously. Perhaps the citizens of Kazakstan were offended because they saw some truths in Cohen's movie...? That, or else they really need to lighten up a little bit. It was all done in jest.

    Hahah. Très risqué. ;]
  • HAHAHAHAHA i went to go see the borat movie this weekend and it was a truly funny comedie, and if the country of Kaz is upset over ONE person, then that shows how weak that country can be. Yes, you do hav a strong culture and a great background, but for goodness sakes jus laugh sometimes

o by the way, if i havent already said it, the movie was HILAROUIS!!!!!

    <(. .<) ( . . ) (>. .)>
  • its funny how all the people who complain about how this movie makes fun of kazakstan try to sound so smart, when they dont realize that the point of the movie isnt that at all. a few people have already nailed the message of Borat, which is to expose the ignorance and stupidity of the people/groups he talks to. Yes he takes a couple of shots at Kazakstan but they are exaggerated to the point where your not supposed to take it seriously. it might as well be tajikiztan or usbekistan or any of those other countries in the area. Hes not trying to single out kazakstan as some backwater country. grow up already
  • Hey everyone, relax!!

Kazakhstan was never the true victim of Borat/Sacha Baron Cohen's comedy. Luka's right, it will always be those people whose dangerous, bigoted and racist views are exposed by his actions.

I have watched many episodes of Borat/Ali G show at home here (Ireland) and I was never shocked by what Borat said or did, in fact what was ultimately more shocking were the responces of the people he spoke to, especially American(sorry guys) who came across really, really badily.

If you need an example, what about those people who sang along with Borat's famous song "so let's all kill the jews"..they were CLAPPING and cheering as he sang! Or the man who made a living allowing people to hunt animals saying Borat should be able to hunt Jews as well? Or when he said that the Nazi had"the right idea" when it came to "the final solution"??

And people are worried about Kazakhstan?
  • I found the film hillarious. I am continualy stunned by how primitive and ignorant some people are, not just in america. but i think the problem with stupid americans is, that they in addition to being stupid, think that they are also above everyone and everything in the world, which is an explosive combination (LITTERALY).

(and no, i'm not a terrorist - if anyone from CIA is reading this.:)

I understand how people in Kazahstan could be offended by this, but in my oppinion the statements about Kazahstan are so upsurd that anyone who takes life with just a tiny grain of salt, can see through them even if he or she isn't in on the joke. In addition, any missunderstanding can be cleared very quickly, i.e. here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borat

Also i think that people who really believe borat's portrayal of Kazahstan dont even deserve to be enlightened on the subject, so i wouldn't worry, unless ofcourse, these people are goverment officials:).

I also know how some people would give anything in the world to lynch mr. Cohen, but that just says a whole lot about them.

I think Sacha Baron Cohen's work is great, because it is exposes sadly the hypocrisy of people, needing only to give a little nudge and the truth about their views is revealed.

A true Satyre of modern society!
Thumbs up Borat, I also LIKE!
