Sigourney Weaver Heartsick Over Alien Sequels

By Katey Rich: 2008-02-19 16:10:17
Sigourney Weaver Heartsick Over Alien Sequels Sigourney Weaver kicked off the Alien franchise with her unforgettable role as Ripley, but when it comes to the intergalactic beastie’s current incarnation in Alien vs. Predator 2, she’s far less enthusiastic. “That whole thing makes me heartsick. That’s Fox’s decision to throw that legacy into the… whatever.”

When asked about potential sequels that include her Ripley character, Weaver said she didn’t see any new stories to tell, but could imagine herself on the big screen in another way. “It wouldn’t surprise me if they 3D-ed the other Alien movies. Some of those shots in the first and second one would be very powerful. You could find a whole new audience.

Weaver is speaking from experience about 3D, given her role in one of the most anticipated upcoming 3D releases, James Cameron’s Avatar. She’s sworn to secrecy about her role in the movie, but acknowledges that she and Vantage Point co-star Zoe Saldana shared some shooting days on the motion-capture set. She also compared the motion-capture shooting process to playing make-believe as a kid. ”OK, I’m putting a blanket over this table, and that’s going to be a castle, and tomorrow it’s going to be a cave. You pretend that something that represents something gives you the whole world. We’re in an empty room with these little outfits on.

The lady who changed science fiction with Alien is optimistic about her next outing with director Cameron, over 20 years after 1986’s Aliens. “He’s doing the most extraordinary job. It’s going to be quite an experience for people. I think it’s going to transform the industry, frankly. To see a serious film done in 3D is really powerful.

Come back later this week to read the rest of our interview with Weaver, as she dishes about her new film Vantage Point, and how she hangs in the Hollywood business after nearly 30 years in the business. Unfortunately I cannot include for you her amazing imitation of Michel Gondry’s French accent while working on Be Kind Rewind, but trust me, it’s just one more reason why Sigourney Weaver is awesome.
