Simon Pegg Is Three Times A Scotty It seems these days that if you sign on for one movie, you automatically have to sign on for two more. The casts of Speed Racer and G.I. Joe have admitted that they're signed up for potential sequels, even though there are no more planned Indiana Jones movies, you can bet Shia LaBeouf will be under contract if there are any. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if John Cho and Kal Penn are signed for Harold and Kumar 3, or if somehow Renee Zellweger will be brought back for Bridget Jones 3. Sequels are money, people!

So it's no surprise to hear Simon Pegg admit that, should it come down to it, he'll be playing Scotty again. In an interview with MTV Movies, the Shaun of the Dead star said he had reservations when signing on for the upcoming Star Trek because it meant agreeing to sequels as well. “You have to commit to a series of films and that puts you in a situation where the studio has some control over what you do. I called up J.J. [Abrams, of course] and I said, ‘The idea is amazing but I’m worried.’ And he said, ‘What’s the worst that can happen? We hang out every three years and make a fun film?’”

Yeah, we hate to say this Simon, but none of us feel too sorry for you. Though he is in a tough position, having to put his own spin on an iconic character, made famous by actor James Doohan. He told MTV, “His Scotty is so definitive. So I decided to just channel my wife’s family and do something that was a tribute to him but not an attempt to ape him.” So aping his wife's family is better? Bet that makes for some awkward family reunions.

Star Trek, of course, comes out in May of 2009, which pretty much seems like a lifetime away. We'll be seeing Pegg on the big screen next weekend, though, in the British comedy Run Fat Boy Run. No, it's not set on the Enterprise, but if it makes you feel better, imagine the movie taking place in outer space .
