Smurfs 2 Trailer Gets Too Close For Comfort

It's coming. After pulling in a whopping $563 million worldwide, The Smurfs movie scored a sequel that's due to hit theaters next summer. Raja Gosnell, who helmed the first movie, is back in the director's chair for The Smurfs 2, and much of the cast has returned to reprise their roles including Anton Yelchin, Hank Azaria, Katy Perry, Jayma Mays, and Neil Patrick Harris.

The sequel will build off a bizarre bit of backstory that Smurfette revealed in their first feature. During some girl talk with Jayma Mays' character, Smurfette explains that she wasn't originally Smurf, but actually a creation of Gargamel's meant to snare the all-male Smurfs. However, Papa Smurf and the other Smurfs accepted her, and mysteriously made her a full-fledged Smurf, filled with the kind of magic Gargamel craves. So in Smurfs 2, Gargamel kidnaps Smurfette to discover how her transformation happened, as he hopes to do the same for his latest creations, the Naughties, voiced by Christina Ricci and J.B. Smoove.

But we're getting ahead of ourselves with all this talk of plot. For now, just take a look at the film's first trailer, which Sony posted on Facebook:

Subtract the subtitles, and this is the teaser I saw play before a recent screening of Wreck-It Ralph. There's not much to see here. There's Clumsy, the kind of goofy physical comedy that appeals to kids, bit of word play, and in theaters you get a better sense of the 3D. But as the first film proved, who needs a plot when you have funny little blue creatures running amok?

Smurfs 2 is slated to hit theaters in the United States on July 31st, 2013.
