Spider-Man's Sinister Six Spin-Off Looking At The Cabin In The Woods' Drew Goddard To Direct

Director Drew Goddard knows his comic books, and Hollywood is now really starting to take advantage of that fact. First it was revealed back in November that he would be the man in charge of writing the upcoming Marvel Studios Netflix Daredevil series, and then - exactly one month later - it was reported that he was going to work with Sony Pictures to write the script for the upcoming Sinister Six movie. Now word has come down that Goddard is not only scripting the blockbuster, but also in talks to helm it.

This news comes to us via Deadline, which says that a contract has not yet been signed between the filmmaker and the studio, but that they are "nearing a deal." Goddard has been rumored to get the directors chair since December, but apparently he has now being seen as Sony's number one choice. The project still doesn't have a release date set, but the film will definitely be coming out after The Amazing Spider-Man 3 - which won't be in theaters until June 10, 2016. Basically, we're going to be waiting quite a while for this one.

Goddard doesn't have a ton of experience in blockbuster filmmaking, but there are many, many good reasons why this news should excite comic book movie and Spider-Man fans. Back in 2012, Goddard finally saw the release of his long-delayed horror movie The Cabin in the Woods (his feature directorial debut) and the film was an absolutely genius piece of work that wound up being my favorite movie of the year. In case you're not familiar with the movie, you can watch the trailer below.

It's also important to note that The Cabin in the Woods was co-written by Goddard and The Avengers director Joss Whedon, and that the two have been collaborators for years. Goddard's earliest work in Hollywood was as a writer for both Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel, and he even had appearances in both Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and Whedon's black-and-white big screen adaptation of Much Ado About Nothing.

The Sinister Six is being planned by Sony as the Spider-Man franchise's response to The Avengers, with the film's titular group consisting of six incredibly powerful villains who plot the death of the webslinger.. A lineup has not yet been announced, but footage from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and series spin-off news suggests the team will consist of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), Vulture (?), Dr. Octopus (?), and Venom (?).
