Star Wars and Drew Struzan artwork are like love and marriage: you can't have one without the other. While the legendary poster artist is associated with a number of other brilliant classics, from the Indiana Jones series to Blade Runner, to Back to the Future to The Goonies, his work for the Star Wars universe is perhaps the most iconic, beginning his work on the saga all the way back in 1978 for the re-release of Episode IV (just known as Star Wars at the time). When the franchise came back in 1999 for the prequel trilogy Struzan was there to make the posters, and now that there's another trilogy on the horizon it looks like he could be back as well.
In an interview with Fanhattan about new work that he's done for the American version of the television series Being Human, Struzan revealed that he has already been approached by Disney about working on the posters for the Star Wars films that are currently in development. Prompted by the fact that he is now 65 years old and has mentioned possible retirement before, the artist was asked if he had any other big projects on the horizon and revealed that the House of Mouse has already been chatting him up. "I got a couple calls already this week on Star Wars from Disney,' Struzan revealed. "Oh my god, I’m trying to be retired! You know, I spent 35 years painting Star Wars. I painted Star Wars before most of you were born!"
But while the studio is asking, that doesn't mean Struzan is totally on board. Acknowledging the allure that comes with returning to the great sci-fi franchise versus living the quiet work-free life, the artist continued, saying,
"I guess there is always a chance. There’s no intention. But I would love to have a day off every now and again, and I have to work a weekend and all through the night. If the opportunity arises, it will be a real temptation. But it’s going to have to be a real temptation to get me away from my wife and my little grandkids and my family. Away from the green trees and the blue skies for a change instead of just locked in the studio. But, you know, never say never. All things are possible."
