Of all the names that have surfaced as rumored directors for Star Wars Episode VII, one of the weirdest has been Safety Not Guaranteed helmer Colin Trevorrow… and it might also be the most accurate. Sure, tons of Star Wars fanatics have been dreaming of heavy hitters like Christopher Nolan or J.J. Abrams taking over the beloved series, but Star Wars is a brand name that doesn't need another big name attached, and new Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy seems likely to hire a newcomer for peanuts rather than shell out for an expensive, experienced director who could come in with too many opinions of his own.
So while Trevorrow is relatively untested, he's easily the kind of director who could land this big job… and he may have obliquely confirmed that he's in the running. Film School Rejects got tipped off to an appearance Trevorrow made on The MacGuffin Podcast back in June, in which he talked about a potential new project that "will probably create a good deal of ire against me on the Internet when people find out what it is." Realizing that interview was recorded in June, a full five months before news broke about Disney buying Lucasfilm and a potential new Star Wars, it's incredible to think that Trevorrow's been keeping this secret so long-- and that he still doesn't know if he's actually got the job. Sure, it's possible he's talking about some other super secret new project, like the Monopoly movie they keep promising, but Star Wars just fits the description too well. The way he talks about the mythology, and "I love it as much as you do," how could it not be Star Wars?
