Video: Every Summer Movie Trailer Looks Exactly The Same

Before we even get started with this legitimately funny video, we have to quibble a bit with the premise. The video says it's pointing out that every 3D movie is the same, going over very similar pop-out shot of skyscraper spires or giant explosions moving at the screen. And yes, that's undeniably true, as you'll see over and over again in the video. But a number of the movies they're picking on here, including Battleship, G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra and Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, weren't even shown in 3D, which kind of dilutes the argument. So retile this in your head as "Every Summer Blockbuster Is The Same," and feel free to enjoy.

We post about new movie trailers all the time, and we enjoy it probably more than anyone when a new trailer actually bothers to break the mold, whether for a giant movie or a very small one. Seeing all the overly familiar trailers mashed up together ought to be a wake up call for Hollywood to stop making everything look so identical, but I think we all know it's not really going to play out that way. Most of the movies picked on here also happened to be very big hits-- even Battleship has made $300 million globally-- and trailers exist entirely to sell you on the movie. Studios are going to keep doing what works, and all of the tropes you see here have clearly been working, over and over again. But that doesn't mean we can't make fun of them, so thanks Funny or Die, for picking up that baton today.
