Every other year or so someone tries to make an aerial dogfighting movie, and ends up with a royal turd. A few years ago it was the James Franco movie Flyboys, and now it looks like it’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star Lena Headey’s turn to try and make it work. Headey is co-starring in a German movie called The Red Baron, which tells the story of World War I’s breathtaking, low-tech dogfights from the German perspective. The Red Baron is the movie’s hero and Headey is his love interest, a nurse who helps convince him he’s being used as propaganda by the evil German government.
Interesting idea right? And unlike Flyboys the movie’s special effects look really, really good. I know because in my inbox tonight was a clip from The Red Baron, put together by the effects house responsible for the movie’s aerial combat sequences to showcase their work. It’s really eye-popping stuff. I don’t know whether the rest of it will be worth doing barrel rolls over, but they really seemed to have nailed the danger, speed, and energy of World War I aerial dogfighting. It’s pretty thrilling… you have to see it.
Scroll down and play the clip for yourself. Below that, I’ve also dropped the movie’s German language trailer. The Red Baron was actually filmed in English, but independently financed by German investors and so right now only has a release date in Germany.

The FX reel looks great. To give a sense of the movie to the non-German speakers, here is a translation of the very first quote:
“Our goal is to shoot planes, not pilots. We are sportsmen, not butchers.” Yeah, right.
