After months of denying Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a franchise reboot, George Lucas is now admitting he has plans for the future, that may or may not include Indy himself. It looks like Internet rumors and speculation are proving to be true, as Lucas complains about expectations about his film and reveals the “strong possibility” for there to be a fifth Indiana Jones movie.
"I haven’t even told Steven or Harrison this," Lucas told Fox News. "But I have an idea to make Shia [LeBeouf] the lead character next time and have Harrison [Ford] come back like Sean Connery did in the last movie. I can see it working out.”
Obviously Lucas hasn’t paid any attention to the response when a franchise shift to LeBeouf’s Mutt was rumored months ago. Fans don’t want an Indiana Jones picture that follows someone other than Indiana Jones. Even if Mutt winds up being ultra-cool in the new movie, it just wouldn’t be Indiana Jones without Indy in the lead.
By the way, isn’t that idea of having Harrison Ford in a role like Sean Connery did in Last Crusade a kind of confirmation of the long lasting rumor that Indy is Mutt’s father? The rumor had been unconfirmed previously, but Lucas appears to have just confirmed it.
Meanwhile, Lucas continues to complain that expectation is so high surrounding the picture that nobody will be happy with the final product, setting up his excuses if the movie isn’t well received. I continue to believe Lucas is full of it, and a decent movie can transcend expectations and still satisfy fandom.
