It was to be expected that Fred Claus would triumph over Lions for Lambs in theaters this weekend. What I didn't expect was for Jerry Seinfeld's Bee Movie to climb it's way to number one, beating everyone else. Surely it wasn't due to word-of-mouth advertising (yeah, I could gone with "buzz", but I'm getting a little tired of that pun). After all, the movie wasn't that great. Maybe Seinfeld took some of his millions and just bought a bunch of tickets so that he could say he has the #1 movie in America?
Bee Movie only dropped 31% compared to its performance last weekend. That's some pretty impressive staying power given that most movies slip at least 40% to 50%. That was enough for Seinfeld's little pet movie project to trade places with American Gangster which was number one last week. Gangster, however, still held together well enough to beat out all the new competition.
Comedy Fred Claus didn't exactly laugh its way to the bank, only scraping together $19 million to take third place. However, that was a small fortune compared to the $6 million Lions for Lambs scraped together. Here's hoping Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep played their politically charges roles for charity cheap, otherwise Redford's little pic will end up seriously in the red. Kind of ironic since it was a movie that was probably more popular in the blue states. Rounding out the new releases, little marketed and little seen Christmas-time horror/thriller P2 dropped in at number eight with only $2 million.
