It's a dark day for movies. The number one...er...thing showing in theaters isn't a movie, it's a 3D concert.
Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour took in $29 million and absolutely demolished a few key box office records this weekend, which would have been really cool if it had actually been a movie. Instead, parents who couldn't afford the scalper prices for the live show got to breathe a sigh of relief by sending their Hannah fans to the theater for a fraction of the price.
The cinema release of the concert only appeared in 683 theaters, the smallest release for any movie at the number one spot. As well, the per theater total skyrocketed to a massive $42,460, topping out Spider-Man 3 ($35.500), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man'ts Chest ($32,800) and Spider-Man ($31,700). That's also a huge leap over what U2's concert earned per theater last weekend. It's a sad, sad day when U2 loses out to Disney's latest fad performer. For a token third record, Hannah took home the biggest Super Bowl weekend total ever.
Not only did the concert thing smash a bunch of records, it also smashed the competition. Three other wide releases opened but the only one to make the top ten was The Eye which came in a distant second with $13 million. Over Her Dead Body debuted at eleveth place with $4.6 million and Strange Wilderness opened with $3 million at thirteenth.
The Hannah Montana concert is only slated to run this week, but don't be surprised if it gets some extra time in theaters after this smash success. After all, Miley Cyrus will only be this hot for a limited time and Disney is bound to try and cash in as much as they can while they can.
